The Canucks have selected Bo Horvat with the ninth-overall pick in the amateur entry draft after acquiring the pick from the Devils for Cory Schneider.

Some scouts tout Horvat as the best shutdown center in junior hockey. Whether that’s accurate or not, there is no denying that he plays the game with a combination of toughness and skill that few players can match. He’s known best for his defensive prowess, excelling in the faceoff circle, while showing tremendous ability on the back check and in the corners. Horvat stepped up as a leader on a loaded London team this season, a testament to his upbeat character and determination. He’s also improved his offensive game scoring 33 goals in 67 games for the Knights. He has a nose for the net but is also a strong playmaker who can center scoring wingers. There are a ton of things to like about Horvat, who could make an impact in the NHL as soon as 2014. There will be a considerable amount of pressure on Horvat as the player who was acquired for Scheider.

Thomas Greiss was the first goaltender to leave the ice for the Penguins Tuesday morning.

That's usually a good way of telling who the starter will be, so it looks like Greiss will get the nod. Marc-Andre Fleury played in the All-Star Game, so the Penguins presumably want to give their top goaltender a breather.

Kris Letang (head) is being regarded as a game-time decision on Tuesday.

The fact that Letang is even being talked about as a possibility to play is an encouraging development. Concussions don't conform to standard timetables, so the fear when Letang was initially hit by Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo was that he would be on the sidelines for a while. As it is though, Letang has only been absent for one game, albeit partially due to the All-Star break. It Letang plays Tuesday, then Scott Harrington will probably serve as a healthy scratch.
Jan 27 - 11:44 AM

Ray Emery will play between the pipes on Tuesday.

Emery has been helping to fill the void left by Steve Mason (knee). However, Mason is healthy enough to backup now, so Emery will probably be warming the bench Thursday.
Jan 27 - 11:26 AM

Erik Johnson will be out of action for three-to-eight weeks with a knee injury.

He had a knee scope performed on Monday. Johnson missed the All-Star Game due to the ailment. He has posted a career high of 12 goals in 47 games this season and he has 23 points.
Jan 26 - 5:49 PM

Darcy Kuemper has been sent to AHL Iowa on a conditioning assignment.

He can be there for up to two weeks. That leaves Devan Dubnyk as Minnesota's likely starter and Niklas Backstrom as the backup. Kuemper made his return to the lineup last Tuesday in a relief appearance against Detroit and he stopped all 14 shots he faced. He missed six games with a lower-body injury before that.
Jan 26 - 4:53 PM

Evgeni Malkin (lower body) has been placed on injured reserve.

He hasn't played since Jan. 20. Malkin wasn't expected to return immediately after the All-Star break. He's tied for third in the league scoring race with 51 points in 45 games this season.
Jan 26 - 4:19 PM

Tyler Johnson (lower body) will be a game-time decision for Tuesday's game against Carolina.

He took part in Monday's practice, but coach Jon Cooper said he's still day-to-day. Johnson wasn't able to play in the All-Star Game because of a lower-body injury, but he's still eligible to play because he participated in All-Star weekend events.
Jan 26 - 3:52 PM

Updating an earlier item, Dion Phanuef is being listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

The Maple Leafs made the announcement via their Twitter account and said that the Toronto captain was injured before the All-Star break.
Jan 26 - 3:49 PM

Kevin Bieksa will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks after he underwent hand surgery.

He sustained a broken hand just before the All-Star break. Bieksa has nine points, 74 hits, 75 blocks and 63 penalty minutes in 45 games this campaign.
Jan 26 - 3:15 PM

Updating an earlier item, Kyle Okposo is projected to miss six-to-eight weeks with an upper-body injury.

That's a tough blow for the Islanders, as Okposo is the second on the team with 44 points in 46 games. He's formed an excellent tandem with John Tavares this season. Ryan Strome could be a candidate to replace Okposo on the top line.
Jan 26 - 3:09 PM

Los Angeles has placed Mike Richards on waivers.

According to reports, the Kings had been trying to move Richards, but they were unsuccessful in their attempts. He has $5.75 million cap hit until 2019-2020 season and he's earning $7 million this year.
