The Canucks have selected Bo Horvat with the ninth-overall pick in the amateur entry draft after acquiring the pick from the Devils for Cory Schneider.

Some scouts tout Horvat as the best shutdown center in junior hockey. Whether that’s accurate or not, there is no denying that he plays the game with a combination of toughness and skill that few players can match. He’s known best for his defensive prowess, excelling in the faceoff circle, while showing tremendous ability on the back check and in the corners. Horvat stepped up as a leader on a loaded London team this season, a testament to his upbeat character and determination. He’s also improved his offensive game scoring 33 goals in 67 games for the Knights. He has a nose for the net but is also a strong playmaker who can center scoring wingers. There are a ton of things to like about Horvat, who could make an impact in the NHL as soon as 2014. There will be a considerable amount of pressure on Horvat as the player who was acquired for Scheider.

Antoine Vermette's hearing will take place on Thursday afternoon in New York City.

He will plead his case with commissioner Gary Bettman to get his automatic 10-game suspension for abuse of an official reduced. Vermette has already missed three games due to the ban with his fourth slated for Wednesday.

Laurent Brossoit will start Tuesday night against Tampa Bay.

He won in his only other start this season back on Jan. 21 against Calgary. Brossoit has a 2.80 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in three appearances this year. Cam Talbot will get back into the cage on Wednesday versus the Florida Panthers.

Mike Hoffman will sit out Tuesday's match against New Jersey due to a groin injury.

He was hurt on Sunday against Winnipeg. Hoffman gingerly skated on Tuesday morning, so consider him day-to-day for now.

Mark Stone won't play Tuesday because of a neck injury.

He didn't take part in the morning skate after he was injured Sunday against Winnipeg. Stone was hit high by Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba, who was suspended two games, but thankfully he didn't suffer a head injury. There is no timetable for his return.
Feb 21 - 12:41 PM

Steven Stamkos took to the ice in full gear Tuesday, working with assistant coach Brad Lauer, before the team's morning skate.

He did some stickhandling, shooting and some one-timers. "He's progressing well," GM Steve Yzerman said. "He's doing well, but can't give a return date yet." Stamkos is believed to be on a 4-6 month timetable since undergoing knee surgery in mid-November. A return this season has not been ruled out yet.

Mitch Marner (upper body) has been placed on injured reserve.

He won't play on Tuesday night against Winnipeg, but still could be back on Thursday against the Rangers. Marner's move to injured reserve allowed the team to recall Frederik Gauthier from the minors.

Mike Smith didn't sustain a significant injury in Monday's game against Anaheim.

Smith left the game in the third period after teammate Jakob Silfverberg collided into him. He underwent the concussion protocol, but fortunately that went well for Smith. "He’s fine," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "All checked out. He’s fine. He was probably ready to come back with a minute or two left."

Florida Panthers center Vincent Trocheck ripped a slap shot through a maze of players with 4.6 seconds left in regulation and, somehow, it found the net for what was the winning goal in St. Louis Monday night.

With their 2-1 victory, the Panthers won their fifth consecutive game and recorded a perfect 5-for-5 road trip. Trocheck has been red-hot himself. His goal, his 21st of the season, was his eighth point in his past five games. Five of those points were assists. His goal Monday came from the high slot; Blues goalie Jake Allen never saw the puck. Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the Panthers, his 17th of the season. It gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Feb 20 - 11:01 PM

Jonathan Bernier will be between the pipes for Monday's game against the Arizona Coyotes.

Even though John Gibson pitched a 24-save shutout against the Kings last night, the Ducks will still opt to give him the night off tonight. Bernier has an 8-4-2 record with a 2.80 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage.
Feb 20 - 8:38 PM

Avalanche defenseman Nikita Zadorov will miss the remainder of the season because of a fractured ankle.

The season of misery just keeps on going for Colorado. Not only have they been horrible on the ice, but they can't seem to catch any breaks either. The injury occurred during Monday's practice after Zadorov got tangled up with Mikko Rantanen. Zadorov was averaging 19:02 of ice time per game. He had no goals, 10 assists and a minus-20 rating in 56 games.
Feb 20 - 7:22 PM

Jacob Trouba has received a two-game suspension for his illegal hit to the head of Ottawa's Mark Stone.

Winnipeg has its bye week coming up, so Trouba will be eligible to return on March 3. Stone was injured on the play while Trouba received a two-minute minor at the time of the incident. Trouba has five goals and 24 points in 47 contests in 2016-17.
