The Canucks have selected Bo Horvat with the ninth-overall pick in the amateur entry draft after acquiring the pick from the Devils for Cory Schneider.

Some scouts tout Horvat as the best shutdown center in junior hockey. Whether that’s accurate or not, there is no denying that he plays the game with a combination of toughness and skill that few players can match. He’s known best for his defensive prowess, excelling in the faceoff circle, while showing tremendous ability on the back check and in the corners. Horvat stepped up as a leader on a loaded London team this season, a testament to his upbeat character and determination. He’s also improved his offensive game scoring 33 goals in 67 games for the Knights. He has a nose for the net but is also a strong playmaker who can center scoring wingers. There are a ton of things to like about Horvat, who could make an impact in the NHL as soon as 2014. There will be a considerable amount of pressure on Horvat as the player who was acquired for Scheider.

Steve Mason will play between the pipes on Saturday.

Mason warmed the bench for four straight games following his disastrous start to the season. This is obviously an opportunity for him to bounce back, but if he doesn't capitalize on it than it will further weaken his position against Ray Emery in the battle for the starting job.

Vincent Lecavalier (foot) will rejoin the Flyers on Saturday.

Look for Lecavalier to play alongside R.J. Umberger and Wayne Simmonds. Lecavalier was out for seven consecutive contests.
Oct 31 - 2:07 PM

Nick Foligno (upper body) is expected to return Friday.

Foligno suffered a scary collision on Sunday when he went head first into a linesman after being pushed into the boards by Jeff Carter. He missed Tuesday's game as a result.
Oct 31 - 12:21 PM

Alexander Semin will probably be a healthy scratch on Saturday.

This comes after Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said that Semin isn't "playing with the pace the league is at." This might spark Semin, but his inconsistent play over the years makes him hard to bet on. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are paying him $7 million annually through 2017-18.

Sam Reinhart has been returned to the Kootenay Ice of the WHL.

The Sabres made the right decision here. Reinhart was averaging a mere 10:21 of ice time per game in Buffalo and he had one assist in nine contests. He'll be a star player in the WHL, where he amassed 36 goals and 105 points in 60 games last season. He'll also get a chance to represent Canada at the World Junior Championships.

Mikael Backlund has been sidelined due to an abdomen injury.

Backlund went into training camp with this ailment and had been playing through it. He's being regarded as week-to-week now, so obviously we don't expect him to return in the near future. He has a goal and four points in 11 games in 2014-15.

Aleksander Barkov suffered a lower-body injury in Thursday's win against Arizona.

He was injured in the third period and is listed as day-to-day. Barkov has endured a sluggish start to the season, with only one goal and no assists in eight matches.

Roberto Luongo has allowed just four even-strength goals this season.

That represents a league low among goalies who has played as many as seven games. However, it's been a different story for him when the opposition has a power play. He's allowed 11 power-play goals this campaign, which ties New Jersey's Cory Schneider for the most in the league. The Panthers need to sort out their 28th ranked penalty kill.

Unrestricted free agent Carlo Colaiacovo has been signed by the Philadelphia Flyers, terms of the contract have not yet been released.

After defensemen Braydon Coburn and Andrew MacDonald both placed on I/R this week, and GM Ron Hextall's stated disdain for calling up touted prospect Shayne Gostisbehere, a signing in Philly was inevitable. The lefty Colaiacovo, still just 31 years old, brings 401 games of experience with 144 points to his credit since 2005. But he hasn't played at least 60 games since 2011 mostly due to injuries.
Oct 31 - 12:41 AM

Jake Allen made 24 saves for the shutout Thursday night, taming the West's third best offense in a 2-0 win.

Allen improves to 2-1 on the season as he avenges his last outing, a 4-1 loss to Vancouver last week. Though Brian Elliott has received six of the nine starts this season, Allen's caliber might warrant another start in the near future despite the team's lack of back-to-back games coming up. Alex Steen scored the winner in the first period for St. Louis.
Oct 31 - 12:01 AM

Marian Hossa reached the 1,000 point plateau on Thursday night by collecting a goal and an assist in Chicago's 5-4 shootout win over Ottawa.

"What a special night, it's a great milestone," Hossa said after the game. "I'm really grateful to all the players that helped me achieve this." Hossa scored midway through the third period to crack the century mark in his 1,100th NHL game. He has five points through 10 games this season.
