Ilya Kovalchuk has agreed to join the KHL's St. Petersburg SKA.

That's the same team that Kovalchuk played for during the lockout. Kovalchuk shocked the hockey world on Thursday with his announcement that he would retire from the NHL and thus walk away from the $77 million still left on his 15-year, $100 million contract with the New Jersey Devils. It's not yet known how much Kovalchuk will earn in the KHL, but it will probably be substantial. The Devils will endure a cap penalty of $250,000 through 2025 due to the cap recapture clause. They also don't have a first round pick in 2014 because they were punished over their first attempt to sign Kovalchuk, which was voided because it circumvented the salary cap.

Jeff Zatkoff will get the start in Monday's game against the New York Rangers.

Zatkoff hasn't won since Dec. 15 (three appearances). He has 2-6-1 record with a 2.93 goals-against-average and a .886 save percentage in 2016-17.

Zack Smith has inked a four-year extension with the Ottawa Senators.

The contract has an annual average value of $3.25 million, which he will earn each year starting in 2017-18. Smith would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the season.
Jan 23 - 5:44 PM

Johnny Gaudreau will be reunited with Sean Monahan on Monday night against Toronto.

The duo will be joined by Alex Chiasson. Gaudreau hasn't scored a goal for nine games and he has three assists during that time. Perhaps skating alongside Monahan, who has been red hot lately, can get Gaudreau back on track.
Jan 23 - 5:36 PM

Thomas Vanek (lower body) will not play on Tuesday night.

He is listed as day-to-day and hasn't been ruled out for Wednesday's game versus Toronto. Vanek was hit in the groin area by a puck on Sunday.
Jan 23 - 5:06 PM

Patrik Laine (concussion) could be back as soon as Tuesday night.

Coach Paul Maurice called him an "option" to play against San Jose. "He feels really good," Maurice said. "So he's been banging on the door a little bit here. He's feeling strong, feeling ready. We needed to push him as hard as we did (Sunday) just to clear up any concerns that we would have. He's very, very close." Laine did some extra skating after Monday's optional session as he prepares to return from a concussion.
Jan 23 - 3:19 PM

Carter Hutton will get the call for Tuesday's game versus Pittsburgh.

Pheonix Copley is slated to back him up. The Blues plan to start Jake Allen versus Minnesota on Thursday. Copley will serve as the understudy for that game as well. Adjust your goaltending accordingly.
Jan 23 - 1:51 PM

Tyler Seguin is dealing with an illness.

He is listed as questionable for Tuesday's match against Minnesota as a result. Seguin has accounted for 16 goals and 45 points in 48 games this season.
Jan 23 - 1:22 PM

Kevin Hayes will be out of action for two-to-three weeks with a lower-body injury.

He was injured in Sunday's game against Detroit after he was involved in a knee-on-knee collision. Hayes is expected to miss at least the next five games as a result of the ailment.
Jan 23 - 1:09 PM

Alex Galchenyuk will sit out Tuesday's game versus Calgary after re-injuring his knee.

Coach Michel Therrien said Galchenyuk "lightly injured" himself near the end of Saturday's game versus Buffalo. He didn't practice Monday and is listed as day-to-day, but the ailment is believed to be minor.
Jan 23 - 12:57 PM

John Carlson (lower body) will not be in the lineup Monday night.

It will mark his fourth straight game on the sidelines with a lower-body injury. Carlson also said that it won't be his decision if he plays on Tuesday. Carlson skated on Monday morning and did some work with the second power-play unit, so he appears to be making progress.
