The Boston Bruins have signed Patrice Bergeron to an eight-year/$52 million extension.

Bergeron still has one-year left on his current contract. In 2014-15, his cap hit will rise from $5 million to $6.5 million. That seems like a very reasonable number for a top-tier two-way center that's in the early stages of his prime years. He had 10 goals, 32 points, and a 62.1% faceoff success rate in 2013.

Derek Dorsett will see second line duty on Sunday.

Dorsett has played most of the season on the fourth line but coach Willie Desjardins had him on the second unit in practice on Saturday alongside Nick Bonino and Chris Higgins. Dorsett has also started playing on the first power play and is looking more and more like a good fantasy asset as he is third in the NHL in penalty minutes with 77. "We need net presence and we need puck recovery, and I think he’s pretty good at both of those," Desjardins stated. "It’s a tough job standing in front of the net. A lot of guys may say they want it, but when the puck’s coming in, they don’t want it. It is a tough role and only a few guys will do that." Dorsett has four goals and 11 points in 31 games. Pick him up.

Olli Maatta does not need surgery on his injured shoulder.

That's the good news as Maatta will still need another month of rehab to return to the lineup. It's been a tough year physically for the young future star as he had a cancerous tumor removed earlier this season on his thyroid gland. Keep him reserved.

Johnny Gaudreau netted two goals for the Flames in their 4-1 win over the Oilers on Saturday night.

With all the talk that the rookie race is two-headed with Filip Forsberg and Aaron Ekblad, Gaudreau continues to impress and should be in the discussion, too. He has goals in three straight games: 12 goals and 29 points on the season. Curtis Glencross (goal, assist) and Joe Colborne got the other goals.
Dec 28 - 12:56 AM

Kris Letang left late in the Penguins’ game Saturday night against the Capitals.

Letang was drilled with an Alex Ovechkin check in the third period, but he stayed in the game. Then he was hit with Ovechkin’s shot later in the frame and left without putting much weight on his right leg. Letang played 23:56, had four penalty minutes, three shots on goal and six hits in the 3-0 loss.

Patrick Kane tallied three points in the Blackhawks’ 5-2 win over the Avalanche on Saturday night.

Kane scored twice — one via the empty net — and added an assist. As if his young career wasn’t already impressive enough, Kane is setting himself up for his best season yet. He has 18 goals and 39 points this season, so he could top 40 goals for the first time, and it shouldn't surprise anyone as he is as talented as they come. Brent Seabrook, Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad also got goals in the win. Jonathan Toews chipped in with two assists.
Dec 27 - 11:52 PM

Devan Dubnyk blocked 35 shots in the Coyotes’ 2-1 shootout win over the Ducks on Saturday night.

The Ducks held a slight shot-attempt advantage for the game, so Phoenix wasn’t totally outplayed in this one, outside of the third period when he made 17 saves. Still, the Coyotes have found themselves a goalie and Mike Smith should not get a start unless it’s a back-to-back and Dubnyk needs a breather. Dubnyk gave up the goal in the first period, and he has allowed just one goal in two straight games, both wins. He owns a 2.52 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.
Dec 27 - 11:38 PM

Braden Holtby blanked the Penguins on 31 saves Saturday night in the Capitals’ 3-0 win.

There really has never been a better time to own the Capitals goaltender as Holtby is playing some of his most consistent hockey. He has just one loss in his last five games, with a sterling .933 save percentage in December and eight wins. Overall, he is 16-8-5 with a 2.22 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

Gustav Nyquist scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Red Wings defeated the Senators on Saturday night 3-2.

Nyquist’s individual effort on this play was tremendous as he skated two laps around the Senators defensive zone and held onto the puck for nearly 30 seconds before firing a wrister past Craig Anderson. He has shown that he has a nose for the net, now with 43 goals in his last 93 games at the NHL level. The goal was his first since Dec. 12, however, as he has scored at a high clip despite a middling 86 shots on goal. He has 15 goals and 23 points this season. Henrik Zetterberg registered a goal and a helper, while Justin Abdelkader got the other marker. Niklas Kronwall picked up two assists.
Dec 27 - 10:23 PM

Scott Hartnell potted two goals to help lead the Blue Jackets to a 6-2 win over the Bruins on Saturday night.

Hartnell had missed just over two weeks because of a broken finger. He scored the game’s first goal and the Blue Jackets’ second as well. The rugged winger has eight goals and 19 points this season and should remain an asset in fantasy leagues. Kevin Connauton also enjoyed a stellar night, with a goal and two helpers. Other goal scorers included Matt Calvert (goal, assist), Jeremy Morin and Nick Foligno. Jack Johnson got two helpers.
Dec 27 - 10:04 PM

Derek Stepan tallied his third career hat trick to power the Rangers to a 3-1 win over the Devils on Saturday night.

Stepan scored one in each period — shorthanded, on the power play and via the empty net. The 24-year-old center is on a five-game points streak, which has seen his numbers climb to six goals and 22 points in 21 games, so he’s definitely setting himself up for a career season. Martin St. Louis had two assists, while Dan Boyle and Carl Hagelin picked up one apiece. The Rangers have won eight games in a row.

Kings general manager Dean Lombardi has asked Justin Williams’ camp for "a little more time" to work out an extension, according to HNIC’s Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman says that Williams "had a soft deadline of next week." Williams, 33, is enjoying a solid season in Los Angeles, with eight goals and 19 points. He’s also a darling of advanced stat community for his puck-possession prowess. Williams is in the last season of a four-year deal that carried a $3.65 million cap hit.
