Winning the Ted Lindsay Award took Connor McDavid by surprise.

"I’m actually shocked," McDavid said. "I definitely didn’t think I would win it, just because everything was made about not being in the playoffs. I didn’t think there was much of a chance." It's seems fair to say that it was the Oilers' failure to make the playoffs that kept him from being one of the finalists for the Hart Trophy, which goes to the league's most valuable player and is voted on by the writers' association. However, the Ted Lindsay Award, which goes to the 'most outstanding player', is voted on by the players and it seems for them the fact that the Oilers struggled as a team was less a factor when judging McDavid's individual performance. McDavid finished the season with 41 goals and a league-high 108 points in 82 games.

New Jersey Devils forward Taylor Hall won the Hart Memorial Trophy on Wednesday night.

The Hart Trophy is "given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team". Hall certainly fit the bill in 2017-18. The 26-year-old finished the year with 39 goals and 93 points in 76 games last season. Hall is one of the huge reasons why the Devils went from being last in the Eastern Conference two years ago to being a Wild Card team last season. This was the first Hart Trophy of his career. Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon and Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar were the other two nominees.

Golden Knights general manager George McPhee was named GM of the year on Wednesday night.

This is hardly surprising considering he built an expansion team that not only won their division but also made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. Vegas finished 2017-18 with an incredible 51-24-7 record in their inaugural season. This is the first time McPhee wins the award. He beat out Winnipeg's Kevin Cheveldayoff and Tampa Bay's Steve Yzerman. This was the fourth individual award of the night for the Golden Knights after Gerard Gallant (Jack Adams), William Karlsson (Lady Byng) and Deryk Engelland (Mark Messier Leadership Award) won a trophy of their own on Wednesday.

Pekka Rinne won his first Vezina Trophy at the NHL Awards ceremony on Wednesday night.

The Vezina Trophy is "given to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at this position as voted by the general managers of all NHL clubs". Rinne had his share of struggles during the playoffs, but he managed to post 42-13-4 record, a 2.31 goals-against-average and a .927 save percentage during the regular season. Rinne had been a finalist for the award multiple times, so it's nice to finally see him win one. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck and Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy were the other finalists for the award.

Gerard Gallant won the Jack Adams Award at the NHL Awards ceremony on Wednesday night.

The Jack Adams Award is given "to the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success". Gallant was a shoe-in for this award, as he led the expansion Vegas Golden Knights to a Pacific Division crown in their first year. The Golden Knights finished the season with a remarkable 51-24-7 record and they also made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. Boston's Bruce Cassidy and Colorado's Jared Bednar were also nominated for the award in 2018.
Jun 20 - 9:22 PM

Anze Kopitar took home the Frank J. Selke Trophy at the NHL Awards on Wednesday night.

The award is "given to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game". Kopitar has been one of the premiere two-way forwards in the league for a number of years. The 30-year-old had 35 goals and 92 points in 82 games during the regular season. This is the second time he wins the award in the last three years. He beat out Philadelphia's Sean Couturier and Boston's Patrice Bergeron.

Islanders forward Mathew Barzal won the Calder Memorial Trophy at the NHL Awards on Wednesday night.

The award is given to "the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League" (rookie of the year). Barzal had an impressive 22 goals and 85 points in 82 games during his first full year. The 21-year-old beat out Vancouver's Brock Boeser and Arizona's Clayton Keller. Barzal will continue to be a huge part of the Islanders' franchise going forward. If John Tavares were to leave in free agency this summer, Barzal would become the face of the franchise.
Jun 20 - 8:38 PM

Victor Hedman won the James Norris Memorial Trophy on Wednesday night.

The award is given to "the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." This is the first time that the Lightning defenseman has taken home the award. The 27-year-old had 17 goals and 63 points in 77 games during the regular season. He beat out Nashville's P.K. Subban and Los Angeles' Drew Doughty.

Connor McDavid took home the Ted Lindsay Award on Wednesday night.

The award is "presented annually to the 'most outstanding player' in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players' Association". This is the second year in a row that he takes home this award. The Oilers missed the playoffs this season, but that wasn't McDavid's fault. The 21-year-old had 41 goals and 108 points in 82 games during the regular season. He beat out New Jersey's Taylor Hall and Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman estimated that the 2018-19 cap will be in the range of $79.5 million to $80 million, though the process of NHLPA negotiations and approval still needs to happen.

That would represent a jump from $75 million in 2017-18. The last time we saw an increase comparable to this was when the cap went from $64.3 million in 2013-14 to $69 million in 2014-15. A healthy cap increase is naturally great news for teams close to the ceiling like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. It's also good for players recently tied to long-term contracts, like Edmonton, which will begin dedicating $12.5 million in cap space annually to Connor McDavid starting with the 2018-19 campaign.

Austin Watson has been charged with domestic assault.

Watson was arrested on Saturday night after a Franklin police officer was flagged down by a witness for a possible domestic situation, according to an arrest affidavit. Watson said that he and his girlfriend were arguing about her drinking and not being able to attend a wedding. He admitted to pushing her and was arrested. As of Wednesday, Watson was let go on a $4,500 bond and he has a court date set for June 28. Nashville responded to the situation by stating they are still gathering information and will fully cooperate with the investigation. The team ended the statement by saying, "The Nashville Predators have and will continue to stand side by side with AMEND in the fight to end violence against women."
