The Maple Leafs have about $6 million in cap space left and they still need to re-sign restricted free agents Cody Franson, Mark Fraser and Nazem Kadri.

Mikael Granlund has benefited from his switch to the wing this season.

"You don't really tire yourself defending as much playing wing," Granlund said. "I've learned it's a big responsibility in this league to be a centerman, and you win games if you defend hard. I think once in a while it took a little bit away from my offense." He is getting the puck more and his offensive creativity has been on display. Granlund is already close to surpassing the 44 points he scored in 82 matches last year, with 10 goals and 26 assists in 43 games.

P.K. Subban (upper body) may be ready to return next week.

"P.K. is looking good," GM David Poile said on Tuesday. "He's doing more and more each day. ... I'm not sure there's a chance he'll play on this road trip ... but I'm sort of looking at (Jan. 24 against Buffalo), our (first) home game back (from the five-game road trip). That could be a good date if everything continues the way it is right now." He has been making positive strides this week with a pair of full practices, including Wednesday's session. Subban has been absent for the last 15 games.

Logan Couture won't play Wednesday due to an illness.

"Just came down with a little bit of a bug. Played through it last game," coach Peter DeBoer said. "Just didn't feel like, one, he'd be able to play, and two, that we'd travel and expose him to the rest of the group. So he's at home, and we've called up [Ryan] Carpenter and he'll play." Consider Couture as day-to-day for the time being.

John Carlson (lower body) is doubtful for Thursday's game against St. Louis.

"He did some therapy stuff today and that," coach Barry Trotz said. "He got worked on yesterday and all the good stuff. I would say he’s doubtful just because he hasn't skated for a couple days. We'll make sure he's healthy before we put him back in." Carlson didn't play on Monday due to a lower-body injury, but he is close to being ready to play again. Still, Washington is considering bringing up a defenseman.
