Jacob Trouba could be out of action for as long as a month.

He has a sprained neck and will have to wear a brace for at least two weeks following a self-inflicted injury when he missed a check and went face first into the boards. At least he did not break his neck, break a cheeckbone or sustain a concussion. The injury could have been much worse. Reserve Trouba immediately and look for a medium-term replacement.

The San Jose Sharks have traded Jason Demers and a 2016 third-round pick to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Brendan Dillon.

Demers has three assists in 20 games this season, which is a huge step down from his 34-point 2013-14 campaign. This is a chance for Demers to get a fresh start, so he'll be worth keeping an eye on over the Stars' next few games.

Daniel Alfredsson has reportedly decided not to play in 2014-15.

Alfredsson had an interest in continuing his career, but he's been dealing with an injured disc. If this is the end of his playing days, then Alfredsson will retire with 444 goals and 1,157 points in 1,246 games. He spent the vast majority of his career with the Ottawa Senators, but left in the summer of 2013 to sign a one-year deal with Detroit.

Mikko Koivu is dealing with an illness.

Koivu missed Friday's practice as a result, but he's still a possibility for Saturday's contest. He has gotten off to a slow start this season with two goals and five points in 18 games.
Nov 21 - 2:05 PM

Niklas Svedberg will be the Boston Bruins' starter on Friday.

Svedberg has a 2.41 GAA and .917 save percentage in seven contests in 2014-15. He'll try to bounce back after allowing five goals on 34 shots in his last start on Nov. 13.
Nov 21 - 12:44 PM

Chad Johnson will get the nod against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.

Johnson has a 3.27 GAA and .878 save percentage in seven games. Given how strong the Penguins' offense has been this season, we're not filled with confidence in Johnson going into this contest.
Nov 21 - 12:42 PM

Thomas Greiss is projected to start on Saturday.

Marc-Andre Fleury will play on Friday and the plan right now is for the goaltenders to split those two games. Greiss has a 1.96 GAA and .938 save percentage in three contests this season.
Nov 21 - 12:39 PM

David Booth (foot) has been sent to the minors on a conditioning stint.

Booth hasn't played yet this season because of the injury. Once he shakes off the rust, he'll begin the task of trying to re-establish himself after struggling for years in Vancouver. He might end up having some worth to the Maple Leafs, but we can't recommend owning him in standard fantasy leagues.
Nov 21 - 12:23 PM

Patrick Sharp (lower body) is on the long-term injured reserve list.

A player put on the LTIR has to miss at least 10 games and 24 days. Sharp hasn't played since Nov. 4 and he's already been sidelined for six contests, so the decision to put him on the long-term list shouldn't be regarded as a grim indicator. Sharp was originally projected to miss three-to-four weeks, so based on that timetable, he wasn't expected to return for at least another week anyways.
Nov 21 - 12:20 PM

Jason Spezza has agreed to a four-year, $30 million contract extension.

Spezza currently comes with a $7 million annual cap hit, so he's only getting a minor increase. That seems pretty reasonable for a center that can average close to a point-per-game. Given that Spezza is 31 years old, the fact that the Stars were able to limit the deal to four years is to their benefit as well. Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn are both tied to $5.75 million and $5.25 million cap hits respectively, so Dallas will be able to comfortably keep the trio on their roster for at least a few years.
Nov 21 - 10:24 AM

Nick Bjugstad scored two goals in regulation and added the shootout winner in Florida's 3-2 win over San Jose.

Bjugstad had a night to remember against the Sharks. The 22-year-old gave the Panthers a 1-0 and 2-1 lead in the game. With the shootout tied at one, Bjugstad beat Antti Niemi to give Florida the win. After a very slow start to the season, he now has four goals and seven points in his last three games. The Panthers don't score many goals so it will be difficult for Bjugstad to keep putting up points.
Nov 21 - 1:34 AM

Ryan Getzlaf scored a goal and an assist in Anaheim's 4-3 shootout win over Vancouver.

The Ducks opened the scoring in the first minute of play and Getzlaf made it 2-0 before the Canucks battled back to take a 3-2 lead. Matt Beleskey tied the game in the third period to send the game to overtime. Corey Perry and Jakob Silfverberg scored to give the Ducks the win. Getzlaf now has six goals and 19 points in 20 games this season. The Ducks' forward was named the game's second star.
