Hurricanes GM Ron Francis expects Alexander Semin (wrist) to be ready for training camp based on the information he's been given.

"My understanding was that he was coming back to train," Francis said. "He's training, according to his agent, a couple times a day and doing therapy on the wrist as well. There were no issues with the wrist, as far as I was told." A report surfaced about a week-and-a-half ago that Semin hadn't fully recovered yet from off-season wrist surgery, but Francis' optimism is a much better sign.

Clarke MacArthur has inked a five-year extension with the Ottawa Senators worth $23.25 million.

Dallas GM Jim Nill likes the team's chances of re-signing Jason Spezza.

"I think it's going to happen. I've talked to his agent," said Nill. "We want Jason and his family to move in here. I think once we get him in here, get training camp rolling, I'll sit down with his agent some more. When we made the trade the vision was he's going to be a Star for a long time. It wasn't just a six-month stop." Spezza is eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2014-15 season. He'll earn $4 million this year on a deal that carries an annual average value of $7 million.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen feels it's very important for Ryan Johansen's contract situation to be settled before training camp opens in a about a month from now.

"It's a business," Kekalainen said. "But for me, the team is always first. Everything we do — whether you're a star, a fourth-liner, a grinder, the tough guy, a depth guy — this is all about the team. That's why you have to be in camp the first day. That's when it starts, and that's when the team comes together. It's very, very important that we start as a team. To me, that is huge. That's going to be a very serious matter from a team point of view." That's not a surprising point of view and it has the potential to change the relationship between the two sides if it becomes a holdout. Johansen's agent, Kurt Overhardt, feels an unresolved contract into camp puts more pressure on Columbus than it does on his client. Both sides feel they have leverage in the process and they haven't budged for more than four weeks. They are roughly $3 million apart per season on a two-year contract. Kekalainen said there's "plenty of time to get a deal done."

Ryan Malone pleaded no contest to DUI charges and agreed to a pretrial diversion program on a drug charge.

That will dismiss his felony charge of cocaine possession if he can successfully complete the program's requirements. His driver's license will be suspended for six months and he must complete 50 hours of community service, as part of DUI punishment. Several teams have reportedly expressed interest in the veteran winger and with his case finished, perhaps he can focus on getting his career back on track.

Steve Mason (finger) got back on the ice Monday for the first time in three weeks.

He suffered a broken pinky finger while playing ball hockey. It looks like Mason will be available for training camp, which is just a month away. We'll let you know if that changes.

Toronto has signed William Nylander to a three-year, entry-level deal.

"Not only does William Nylander bring a high level of speed and skill to his game but he has a very strong character on and off the ice," GM Dave Nonis said. "We believe he has a very bright future and are happy to have him signed to his first NHL contract." Nylander will attend training camp with the Leafs and if he isn't ready to claim a roster spot then he's eligible to return to the Europe or play in the AHL. He was the eighth overall pick in the 2014 draft.

There's nothing new to report with regard to contract talks between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Ryan Johansen.

FedEx Field has reportedly been ruled out as a possible destination for the 2015 Winter Classic, as the Washington Redskins will host the Dallas Cowboys there on Dec. 28 and officials will not have enough time to flip the field into an ice rink.

That leaves Nationals Park, the city's baseball field, as the leading candidate to host the event on Jan 1, 2015. RFK Stadium, home of the D.C. United MLS team is also in the mix, as well as a few far-fetched ideas of holding the game at the National Mall, Camden Yards or M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens. The Caps will host the Blackhawks in the annual spectacle, wherever it may be held.

Sidney Crosby said on Friday that he is pleased with the recovery of his injured right wrist after testing it in ramped up on ice workouts in Florida last week.

Crosby injured his right wrist at some point during last season. Several doctors recommended arthroscopic surgery this summer, however, Crosby and his agent opted to seek a more conservative sort of treatment. Crosby has been receiving injections to help heal the wrist throughout the summer, which have avoided the need for an operation. Results so far are good, and we expect the star to be producing at full capacity at the start of training camp.
