Rick DiPietro has agreed to a professional tryout with Carolina's AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

He will join the team Saturday night. DiPietro was bought out by the New York Islanders in July. The oft-injured netminder will join the Hurricanes' organization as a contingency plan. Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin are out with injuries, so Carolina has an inexperienced tandem of Justin Peters and Mike Murphy right now.

Tomas Tatar has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings.

The financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed by the Red Wings. After a few strong campaigns in the minors, Tatar firmly established himself with Detroit last season with 19 goals and 39 points in 73 contests. We don't see the 23-year-old as a future star, but he does have some untapped offensive upside and we anticipate him setting new career-highs in 2014-15.

Derick Brassard and the New York Rangers have agreed to terms on a new contract, thus avoiding a salary-arbitration hearing.

There are reports that the contract is worth $25 million for five years. Brassard, 27 in September, had been a restricted free agent. His arbitration session with the Rangers was scheduled for Monday. Brassard had a career-high 18 goals in 81 games last season for the Rangers. He also scored 45 points, which ranked fourth on the team. He also tied for fourth on the team with 12 points in the post-season. In 403 games with the Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets, Brassard has 81 goals and 225 points. He is likely to serve as the Rangers' second-line center next season, behind Derek Stepan.

James Reimer has signed a two-year, $4.6 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Reimer had an arbitration hearing scheduled with the Maple Leafs for Monday. He lost the starting job to Jonathan Bernier last season and has reportedly requested a trade. The Maple Leafs might still be able to accommodate his request, but most teams are already locked in when it comes to their goaltending, so Toronto only has a limited number of potential trading partners.

Ryan O'Reilly has inked a two-year, $12 million contract with the Colorado Avalanche.

O'Reilly and the Avalanche narrowly avoided arbitration. His $6 million annual cap hit puts O'Reilly in a tie with Matt Duchene for the highest cap hit on the team. He'll be an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of this contract and it will be interesting to see if the Avalanche eventually decide to trade him rather than risk watching him allow his contract to expire to that he can play for the highest bidder.
Jul 23 - 10:07 AM

Chris Kreider signed a two-year, $4.95 million contract with the New York Rangers.

Kreider and the Rangers narrowly avoided an arbitration hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Kreider had asked for $2.8 million annually while the Rangers countered with $2.05 million per season, so the two sides agreed to a deal in the middle. He had 17 goals and 37 points in 66 games in 2013-14.
Jul 23 - 9:32 AM

Mats Zuccarello has agreed to a one-year, $3.55 million contract.

Zuccarello reportedly wanted $4.5 million annual salary as part of a long-term deal, but the Rangers probably favored giving him a "show me" contract instead. He had 19 goals and 59 points in 77 games last season, but his previous campaigns in the NHL had been something of a mixed bag.
Jul 22 - 6:07 PM

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed David Booth to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.

There was a time when Booth was a safe bet to score over 20 goals and 40 points per season. However, that's when he was logging 18-plus minutes per game in Florida, which ended with his acquisition by the Vancouver Canucks. Booth never fit in with Vancouver and his problems were amplified by a series of injuries. A fresh start is exactly what Booth needs, but he's far from a safe bet to capitalize on this opportunity.
Jul 22 - 4:02 PM

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired former vice president of hockey operations Dave Poulin and assistant general manager Claude Loiselle.

Although Toronto hasn't engaged in a major shakeup of its roster and has decided to retain head coach Randy Carlyle and GM Dave Nonis, the Maple Leafs have engaged in a personnel shakeup after they endured yet another spectacular collapse in 2013-14. They have also hired 28-year-old Kyle Dubas to serve as an assistant general manager. Dubas previously served as the OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds' general manager for three years. He was one of the youngest GMs in OHL history when he originally took the job with the Greyhounds.
Jul 22 - 11:39 AM

Cody Franson has inked a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Franson had an arbitration hearing scheduled for Monday, so the two sides agreed to terms just under the wire. The deal represents a substantial raise over his previous one-year, $2 million deal. He had five goals and 33 points in 79 games in 2013-14.
Jul 21 - 10:00 AM

The New York Rangers have confirmed that they've signed veteran forward Lee Stempniak to a contract and reports suggest it's worth $900,000 for one year.

Stempniak, 31, played 73 games last season with the Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins. He had 12 goals, 22 assists and 32 penalty minutes.

Dmitry Kulikov has signed a three-year, $13 million contract extension with the Florida Panthers.

Kulikov was a restricted free agent after completing his two-year, $5 million deal. He had 19 points and 66 penalty minutes in 81 games last season. The Panthers were one of the worst teams offensively last season and while they won't be great in 2014-15, they should at least approach the level of mediocrity and that will help Kulikov reach the 25-point mark for the third time in his career.
