Jesper Fast has been sent down to the minors.

The Rangers needed to clear up a roster spot for Carl Hagelin, who is expected to return from a shoulder injury. Fast has no points in eight games with the Rangers this season.

The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly interested in hiring Ulf Samuelsson as their next assistant coach.

He would replace Mike Kitchen, who was fired back in April. Samuelsson spent the 2016-17 season as the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers (Carolina's farm team). He also has experience as an associate coach with the Arizona Coyotes and as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers.

John Gibson is questionable for Game 6 with a lower body injury.

Gibson was pulled in Game 5 when he suffered a lower body injury and although he did travel with the team to Nashville, a decision on his status will be made after the morning skate. "We’ll do a reassessment tomorrow morning at our morning skate," coach Randy Carlyle said. If Gibson is unable to go, Jonathan Bernier will get the start and Jhonas Enroth will be the backup. Stay tuned.

Rickard Rakell (lower body) will not play in Game 6 on Monday.

Rakell missed Game 5 as a surprise scratch but is obviously ailing as he did not make the trip to Nashville for Monday's game. Rakell led the Ducks in goals this season with 33 goals and his loss from the lineup may be pivotal.

Erik Karlsson could have returned for the third period of Game 5, but Senators coach Guy Boucher opted to let him rest.

Boucher's decision made sense given that Ottawa was already down 5-0 through 40 minutes, so keeping Karlsson in the game wouldn't have turned the tide. Karlsson appeared to suffer a foot or ankle injury when he got tangled with Pittsburgh's Scott Wilson in the second period. Karlsson left the game immediately after that incident, but he's expected to be fine for Game 6.

Henrik Lundqvist led Team Sweden to 2-1 shootout victory over Canada in the gold medal game of the 2017 World Championship.

Lundqvist stopped 42 of 43 shots prior to the shootout and didn't surrender a single goal in four shootout rounds. He's certainly going into his summer training on a much more positive note after his Rangers were eliminated by the Ottawa Senators in the second round. He decided to play for Team Sweden in part because his brother Joel was the team captain, who he hadn't played with for 12 years.

Erik Karlsson left Game 5 in the second period and didn't return for the start of the third.

Karlsson got tangled with Pittsburgh's Scott Wilson and appeared to hurt his foot or ankle in the process. It's not yet known how serious Karlsson's injury is, but keep in mind that Pittsburgh was already up 5-0 through 40 minutes, so even if Karlsson could return, it would make sense just to let him rest.
May 21 - 5:19 PM

Bryan Rust (upper body) has drawn back into the Penguins' lineup for Game 5 on Sunday.

Pittsburgh didn't have Rust for two straight games. He's found the back of the net five times in 14 playoff games this year. Look for him to play on the third line with Nick Bonino and Carter Rowney.
May 21 - 3:06 PM

Matt Murray will start in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final Sunday afternoon.

It was a bit surprising when the Penguins decided to start Murray in Game 4 given that Marc-Andre Fleury had been great aside from his rough outing in Game 3. However, the move paid off as Murray stopped 24 of 26 shots in a 3-2 win against Ottawa Friday night. After that outcome, it was expected that the Penguins would stick with Murray.

Nicklas Backstrom has become the leader of the Washington Capitals.

While most would figure it would be Alex Ovechkin, Ovie is not the one in the dressing room to say a lot and Backstrom has become quite vocal when needed. "He's a fairly quiet guy," T.J. Oshie said. "He's reserved, he's extremely poised with his emotions and with his hockey game, how he carries himself on the ice. When things need to be said and Nick speaks and he stands up and he says something, you listen because he cares, he thinks about what he says and he says the right things and a lot of the right moments." Backstrom is the Capitals top point-getter as he finished with 86 points in the regular season and 13 points in 13 playoffs games. He should be taken in the top-two rounds of most pools next season.
May 21 - 7:27 AM

John Gibson (lower body) told head coach Randy Carlyle that he can play in Game 6 against Nashville on Monday night.

That doesn't mean that Gibson will actually be available to play in that contest. Gibson left Game 5 after the first period and never returned. The Ducks are now on the brink of elimination after dropping Game 5.
May 20 - 11:23 PM

Pontus Aberg scored the game-winning goal in Saturday's 3-1 win over Anaheim in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final.

This was a pretty impressive result considering the Preds went into the game without Ryan Johansen and Mike Fisher. Aberg's goal at the 11:01 mark of the third period gave the Preds a 2-1 lead at the time, and they never looked back. This was the first playoff goal of his career. Aberg now has a goal and an assist in nine games this postseason. Colin Wilson and Austin Watson also found the back of the net for Nashville. The Predators now lead the best-of-seven series 3-2. They'll have an opportunity to eliminate the Ducks in Nashville on Monday night.
