Nathan Horton (shoulder) skated on Wednesday for the first time since the summer.

That follows an encouraging MRI on his surgically repaired shoulder. "The doctors here looked at it and it looks really good," Horton said. "It looks like we're on track still and that's the good news that we wanted. I can't read the thing, but you can see that it's healing or healed and I think they got the news that they wanted." He is about a month to month and a half away from returning on his current track.

Dany Heatley has agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

The chances of Heatley bouncing back to the point where he's a serviceable top-six forward aren't great, but we can't fault the Ducks for taking a chance on him at that price. Heatley had 12 goals and 28 points in 76 contests in 2013-14.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have confirmed that Sidney Crosby suffered a wrist injury during the 2013-14 campaign.

Based on previous reports, it sounds like that injury hindered Crosby's play in the postseason. Earlier reports also suggested that Crosby will have surgery, but the Penguins said that might not end up happening. "We expect to have a decision by early next week," Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said. It's believed that Crosby won't miss any playing time due to this injury even if he does have surgery.

Cory Schneider has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the New Jersey Devils.

New Jersey won't provide any further details regarding the contract, but it's reportedly a seven-year, $42 million contract. If that's true then it seems like a fair amount for Schneider. He's never had the opportunity to serve as a team's clear cut starter, but he's been a great goaltender for years and that should continue in his expanded role.

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Patrick Kane to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension.

Jonathan Toews signed an identical contract. Kane and Toews new cap hits of $10.5 million annually don't take effect until the 2015-16 campaign, but currently they're projected to be the two highest in the league. Kane has emerged as a point-per-game player and a clutch performer in the playoffs, although his recent injury history makes him a bit of a risk going forward.

Jonathan Toews has agreed to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension.

Patrick Kane signed an identical contract. Kane and Toews new cap hits of $10.5 million annually don't take effect until the 2015-16 campaign, but currently they're projected to be the two highest in the league. Toews fantasy value in standard leagues will always be a step below his actual worth as his offensive contributions are only a portion of what he brings to the table. He's a superb two-way center and a great team leader.

Sidney Crosby is expected to have wrist surgery within the next few days.

It's not known when Crosby suffered the injury, but it reportedly impacted his performance in the playoffs. He had just one goal and nine points in 13 postseason games, but he's previously rejected the notion that he was injured. The good news is that he's not expected to miss any playing time as a result of this procedure.

Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning denied the recent reports that he's interested in trading prospect Hunter Shinkaruk.

"I don't know where that came from. We were never actively looking to trade Hunter Shinkaruk. This stuff gets started out there," said Benning. "That's not true." Shinkaruk previously stated that he liked the media side of hockey and said he still enjoys it despite the recent trade speculation. He added that he's fully recovered from the hip surgery he underwent in January.

Mike Fisher suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while training.

Fisher will miss the next four-to-six months as a result. In other words, Fisher isn't expected to return until November at the earliest and he might end up missing half the season. Even if he does end up missing just the first month, this will probably have a significant impact on his offseason training regimen, so we wouldn't be surprised if he struggles once he is back.

Anton Volchenkov has agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the Nashville Predators.

Volchenkov became a free agent after the New Jersey Devils bought out the last two seasons of his six-year, $25.5 million contract. He's a defensive defenseman that will probably end up on Nashville's third-pairing.
Jul 7 - 4:55 PM

Jeff Petry has agreed to a one-year, $3.1 million contract for the 2014-15 campaign.

Petry is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, so he will be the subject of trade rumors if the Oilers once again struggle to make the playoffs. He had 17 points and 42 penalty minutes in 80 games last season.

Johnny Gaudreau, who is 5-foot-9, has reached out to other smaller forwards such as Martin St. Louis for advice on how to make it at the NHL level.

In a league that is getting bigger, faster and stronger, Gaudreau, a Flames prospect, is 5-foot-9, 150 pounds. "I've got a lot of great advice," Gaudreau said. "I've just got to make sure I follow in their footsteps and do what they've been doing. They said you need to be strong in your legs, definitely work out your legs. And you don't need to be too big in your upper body because you won't be able to stickhandle that well. Just a lot of great pointers from a lot of great guys and I really appreciate it. It's just doing the little things right, keep working out, making sure I'm skating and getting stronger. Obviously I'm going to get stronger. I have to make sure I keep working out and working hard." Gaudreau had 36 goals and 80 points with Boston College last season, and he scored in his only NHL game.
