The Washington Capitals video coach Brett Leonhardt will be Washington's backup goaltender on Friday.

Michal Neuvirth was a late scratch due to a lower-body injury, so the Capitals needed to act fast. Believe it or not, this isn't a first for Leonhardt. Back when he was a website producer, the Capitals turned to him under similar circumstances on Dec. 12, 2008. Leonhardt played a bit of Division III hockey in college.

Jonathan Huberdeau (Achilles) might not play at all in 2016-17.

Losing Huberdeau has been a major blow to the Panthers and not getting him back at all will severely hinder their chances of making the playoffs. As Panthers coach Tom Rowe noted though, Florida will not rush back one of their franchise players. Huberdeau has 58 goals and 172 points in 272 career games.

Aleksander Barkov (lower body) might not be able to return this season.

Barkov hasn't played since Dec. 28. Losing him would be a big blow to the Panthers' chances of making the playoffs, but it's vital that they be careful with Barkov as they hope he'll be a major part of their franchise for many years to come. Before getting hurt he had nine goals and 27 points in 36 contests this season.

Sam Bennett will spend Thursday's game in the press box.

This corresponds with Micheal Ferland returning from a lower-body injury. Of course Bennett isn't the player who would typically be scratched to make room, but he is on a 10-game point drought. Perhaps this will help Bennett reset.

Scott Darling will play between the pipes on Friday.

Darling last started in a game on Jan. 6, so he could use the work to stay fresh. He has a 11-4-2 record, 2.34 GAA, and .924 save percentage in 20 contests this season.
Jan 19 - 1:47 PM

Johnny Boychuk is dealing with an upper-body injury.

Boychuk also missed Saturday's contest due to an upper-body injury, though that might not be related. Either way, Scott Mayfield will play instead of Boychuk on Thursday.

Al Montoya will be the Montreal Canadiens' starter on Friday.

It will be the first of a back-to-back set and Carey Price will get the nod on Saturday. Montoya has a 6-4-2 record, 2.86 GAA, and .907 save percentage in 13 contests this season.

Andrei Markov (groin) hasn't been seeing improvement lately and he will consequently stop skating.

The hope is that taking a step back will help him recover. At this stage he's also regarded as week-to-week. He last played on Dec. 17.

Mikael Granlund has benefited from his switch to the wing this season.

"You don't really tire yourself defending as much playing wing," Granlund said. "I've learned it's a big responsibility in this league to be a centerman, and you win games if you defend hard. I think once in a while it took a little bit away from my offense." He is getting the puck more and his offensive creativity has been on display. Granlund is already close to surpassing the 44 points he scored in 82 matches last year, with 10 goals and 26 assists in 43 games.

With three seconds on the clock in overtime, Connor McDavid scored a controversial game winning goal in a 4-3 win over the Panthers.

McDavid’s shot went into James Reimer’s glove, but it was adjudged that the puck was caught behind the goal line. McDavid also had two assists in the game, which lifted him over the 100-point mark for his career. Last year, he scored 48 points in 45 games and so far this year he has 54 points after 47 contests.

Well, things looked good for the Bruins after the first period, as they were up 4-1. The Red Wings battled back in the second to tie the game at four, but Boston still went into the third frame with a 5-4 lead, which they also let slip away. Bergeron's goal was scored on the power play, while he picked up an assist at even-strength and another one shorthanded. He now has nine points in his last eight contests. He also helped set up Gustav Nyquist's game-tying goal in the third, which eventually sent the game to overtime. In the shootout, Frans Nielsen scored the winner for the Red Wings, who have now won three in a row. Tatar is up to 10 goals and 12 assists in 45 games this season.
