Detroit Red Wings trainer Piet Van Zant is encouraged by Pavel Datsyuk's recovery from ankle surgery.
"Piet watched him work out, told me he's in good spirits," GM Ken Holland said. "He's had no setbacks. He's doing lots of training. He's excited. He wants to feel 100 percent. He's happy about the surgery, what he's able to do at this point." Datsyuk is scheduled to be re-evaluated in mid-September by the doctor who performed his procedure. Holland thinks that Datsyuk's recovery is on schedule, which was set at a "minimum of three months." He could be available at the earliest in late October, but it wouldn't be surprising if he was held out a little longer due to his injury woes over the past couple of seasons.
