Joe Thornton scored twice -- including the overtime game-winner -- for the Sharks as they topped the Wild 3-2 on Saturday night.

Fresh off his brand new three-year extension, Thornton did something he's not really known for at this point in his career. Thornton continues to be a big point producer, but he's been one of the league's best distributors and not goal scorers. He now has eight goals this season, to go along with 47 assists. Patrick Marleau, also in his first game since his new three-year extension, scored his 22nd. Matt Irwin had two helpers, while Tommy Wingels and Joe Pavelski each got one.

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Trevor van Riemsdyk and a 2018 seventh-round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for the 62nd overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Vegas claimed van Riemsdyk from Chicago in the expansion draft. He had five goals and 16 points in 58 contests in 2016-17. The Golden Knights got a lot of defensemen in the draft, so it was expected that they'd follow that up with trades like this one. "As a right-handed defenseman, Trevor fills an immediate need in our lineup," said Hurricanes GM Ron Francis. "He has obviously already experienced success in Chicago, and now will be another good, young piece on our blueline."

The New York Islanders have acquired Jordan Eberle from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Ryan Strome.

Eberle had 47 and 51 points in each of his last two campaigns, which is a step down from what we had seen from him in the past. Given that he has a $6 million annual cap hit for another two seasons, that offensive decline was problematic. For the Islanders though, Eberle has the potential to be the winger for John Tavares that they've been looking for. If the two mesh well in 2017-18 then Eberle could see a significant spike in production, possibly to the point where he returns to the 60-70 point range.

Connor McDavid has been named as the winner of the Hart Trophy.

The Hart Trophy goes to the league's most valuable player as voted on by the PHWA. McDavid ended up with 1,604 points over Sidney Crosby, who had 1,104. The last time this award went to a member of the Edmonton Oilers, it was Mark Messier claiming it in 1989–90. McDavid shone in his sophomore campaign with 30 goals and a league-leading 100 points in 82 games. He's the fourth youngest winner of this award. He also claimed the Ted Lindsay Award as the league's most outstanding player as voted on by his peers.

The Vegas Golden Knights took Marc-Andre Fleury from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the expansion draft.

The Penguins also provided Vegas with a 2020 second round pick to guarantee that the Golden Knights would choose Fleury. He will be one of the highest profile members of the expansion team. The 32-year-old is a three-time Stanley Cup winner with a 375-216-68 record, 2.58 GAA, and .912 save percentage in 691 career games. He's been a big part of the Penguins for a long time, but Matt Murray rose to become the team's number one goaltender and was in between the pipes for both of the Penguins' championship-winning games in 2016 and 2017. In the end, the Penguins are arguably better off now with the $5.75 million in freed cap space, which is why they surrendered a pick to make sure Vegas took him.

The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired William Karlsson, David Clarkson, a 2017 first-round pick, and a 2019 second-round selection from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Karlsson was the actual expansion draft pick and Clarkson was included so that the Blue Jackets could shed an expensive contract. For Vegas the main allure here is the picks, but Karlsson can contribute. He had six goals and 25 points in 81 games last season and he at the age of 24 he still has some room to grow.

Sergei Bobrovsky is the winner of the Vezina Trophy.

This is the second time that Bobrovsky has claimed the award after he previously won it for his work in the 2013 lockout shortened season. The last goalie to win this award multiple times was Tim Thomas in 2009 and then again in 2011. Bobrovsky posted a 2.06 GAA and .931 save percentage in 63 starts last season en route to a 41-17-5 record. He claimed 25 first place votes, beating out 2015-16 winner Braden Holtby, who got four first place votes.

Craig Anderson has won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The award goes to the player who best exemplifies qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Anderson was the favorite to win, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. He had to leave the Senators for stretches to be with his wife, Nicholle, during her battle with throat cancer. Anderson was excellent for Ottawa when he was in the lineup and the best news is that Nicholle's recovery is going well after her scans came back cancer free.

The Golden Knights have selected James Neal in the expansion draft.

Neal has one more season left on his contract at a $5 million cap hit. He does have a modified no-trade clause, but could be flipped to another team. If he stays with Vegas then he will provide the team with some goal-scoring touch up front as a top-six forward.
Jun 21 - 9:27 PM

The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired Jean-Francois Berube, Mikhail Grabovski, Jake Bischoff, a 2017 first-round pick, and a 2019 second-round pick from the New York Islanders.

Berube is the player that Vegas actually claimed in the expansion draft. The rest are pieces that the Islanders gave to the Golden Knights in exchange for them taking Berube over some better options and also absorbing the final season of Mikhail Grabovski's four-year, $20 million contract. Berube will likely start the season in the AHL. In other words, Vegas didn't get much from the Islanders in terms of immediate help, but those two high picks could play a key role in the Golden Knights building their future.

Auston Matthews has been awarded with the 2017 Calder Trophy.

Matthews is the Leafs' first Calder Trophy winner since Brit Selby in 1965-66. The 19-year-old center led all first-year players with 40 goals and 69 points in 82 games. Matthews was the runaway victor with 164 of 167 first-place votes.
Jun 21 - 9:06 PM

Reilly Smith has been acquired by Vegas from Florida.

The Golden Knights sent a 2018 fourth-round pick to the Panthers in the deal. Smith has a $5 million cap hit for the next five years. For accepting this trade the Golden Knights were permitted to select Marchessault in the expansion draft.
