The Washington Capitals traded a first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, a conditional choice in 2019, Zach Sanford and Brad Malone for Kevin Shattenkirk and Pheonix Copley.

Shattenkirk has been a star defenseman for the St. Louis Blues but is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The Blues found a good package for Shattenkirk while the Caps, already a strong Stanley Cup contender, improved their defense considerably. The offensive-minded Shattenkirk should pay big dividends to his fantasy owners as a Washington blueliner.
