Chris Tanev didn't play Wednesday because of a broken thumb.

He's projected to be sidelined until at least the end of February. Tanev has recorded five goals, 14 points and a plus-8 rating in 54 games this year.

Daniel Cleary has agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Cleary will earn $1.5 million in base salary, but he can make an extra $1 million in bonuses. He had four goals and eight points in 52 games in 2013-14.

Vladimir Sobotka has reportedly signed a three-year contract with the KHL's Omsk.

Sobotka is set to earn $4 million annually and has the flexibility of returning to the NHL after any season. Sobotka was a restricted free agent and the St. Louis Blues filed for arbitration. However, Blues GM Doug Armstrong also said that he offered Sobotka contracts ranging from one to five years, including a three-year deal that would pay him more than $3 million annually.

Steve Ott has agreed to a two-year, $5.2 million contract extension with the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues acquired Ott from the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Ryan Miller trade. He's known primarily for his gritty play, but he does chip in offensively. He had 23 points and 92 penalty minutes in 82 games in 2013-14.

Dany Heatley has agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

The chances of Heatley bouncing back to the point where he's a serviceable top-six forward aren't great, but we can't fault the Ducks for taking a chance on him at that price. Heatley had 12 goals and 28 points in 76 contests in 2013-14.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have confirmed that Sidney Crosby suffered a wrist injury during the 2013-14 campaign.

Based on previous reports, it sounds like that injury hindered Crosby's play in the postseason. Earlier reports also suggested that Crosby will have surgery, but the Penguins said that might not end up happening. "We expect to have a decision by early next week," Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said. It's believed that Crosby won't miss any playing time due to this injury even if he does have surgery.

Cory Schneider has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the New Jersey Devils.

New Jersey won't provide any further details regarding the contract, but it's reportedly a seven-year, $42 million contract. If that's true then it seems like a fair amount for Schneider. He's never had the opportunity to serve as a team's clear cut starter, but he's been a great goaltender for years and that should continue in his expanded role.
Jul 9 - 4:11 PM

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Patrick Kane to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension.

Jonathan Toews signed an identical contract. Kane and Toews new cap hits of $10.5 million annually don't take effect until the 2015-16 campaign, but currently they're projected to be the two highest in the league. Kane has emerged as a point-per-game player and a clutch performer in the playoffs, although his recent injury history makes him a bit of a risk going forward.

Jonathan Toews has agreed to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension.

Patrick Kane signed an identical contract. Kane and Toews new cap hits of $10.5 million annually don't take effect until the 2015-16 campaign, but currently they're projected to be the two highest in the league. Toews fantasy value in standard leagues will always be a step below his actual worth as his offensive contributions are only a portion of what he brings to the table. He's a superb two-way center and a great team leader.

Sidney Crosby is expected to have wrist surgery within the next few days.

It's not known when Crosby suffered the injury, but it reportedly impacted his performance in the playoffs. He had just one goal and nine points in 13 postseason games, but he's previously rejected the notion that he was injured. The good news is that he's not expected to miss any playing time as a result of this procedure.

Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning denied the recent reports that he's interested in trading prospect Hunter Shinkaruk.

"I don't know where that came from. We were never actively looking to trade Hunter Shinkaruk. This stuff gets started out there," said Benning. "That's not true." Shinkaruk previously stated that he liked the media side of hockey and said he still enjoys it despite the recent trade speculation. He added that he's fully recovered from the hip surgery he underwent in January.

Mike Fisher suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while training.

Fisher will miss the next four-to-six months as a result. In other words, Fisher isn't expected to return until November at the earliest and he might end up missing half the season. Even if he does end up missing just the first month, this will probably have a significant impact on his offseason training regimen, so we wouldn't be surprised if he struggles once he is back.
