Henrik Sedin (ribs) is close to being able to return, but he's still listed as day-to-day.

It isn't clear if he'll be ready to play Friday night against Winnipeg. Canucks interim coach Mike Sullivan hopes that Sedin will join the club during their five-game road trip prior to the Olympic break.

Superstar Sidney Crosby fired a game-high seven shots on goal as he and the Pittsburgh Penguins shut out the Red Wings 2-0 in a preseason game in Detroit Wednesday night.

Crosby played 18:29 Wednesday after missing the start of the preseason with a minor injury and then two games while attending his grandmother's funeral in Canada. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots for the shutout in Detroit. Blake Comeau and Oskar Sundqvist scored for Pittsburgh; Nick Spaling had two assists. Jimmy Howard steered aside 31 shots in the Detroit net.

Martin St. Louis was experimented with at center during Wednesday's practice.

He just played in the middle while the Rangers worked on their power play, but coach Alain Vigneault said St. Louis will see time at center in five-on-five situations as well in at least one of the team's last two preseason games. The Rangers are willing to try new things with Derek Stepan sidelined by a broken left fibula.
Oct 1 - 5:08 PM

Boone Jenner underwent surgery on his hand and he's expected to be sidelined for five weeks.

He suffered a broken hand when he was struck by a puck in practice on Sunday. Jenner was projected to take over at center to start the season if the Jackets were unable to re-sign Ryan Johansen, but now they will have to come up with a new plan.
Oct 1 - 2:22 PM

Robin Lehner's preseason match against Winnipeg on Tuesday was cut short after he experienced "some swelling" in his stick hand.

He didn't play after the first period as a precaution, but coach Paul MacLean stated that Lehner would be "fine." He was slated to split the game evenly with Craig Anderson.
Oct 1 - 1:03 PM

Gustav Nyquist (knee) will be in the lineup for Detroit on Wednesday night.

He was hurt in a knee-on-knee collision on Saturday and missed Monday's preseason contest as a result, but he'll play against Pittsburgh.
Oct 1 - 11:05 AM

Sam Reinhart hasn't been able to produce much offense since putting on a Buffalo jersey.

He contributed one assist in four games during the Traverse City Prospects Tournament and he doesn't have a point in three NHL preseason contests. "It's getting a little frustrating," Reinhart said. "I think the biggest thing is I'm getting chances, trying to create. I'm just going to stick with it and focus on the bigger picture. But obviously that's part of my game and I think that's going to have to come." He is slated to play on Wednesday and Friday, as the Sabres wrap up their exhibition play and then a decision on where he will play this season will follow. Reinhart may be squeezed out of an NHL spot by Mikhail Grigorenko, who has enjoyed a very good training camp.
Oct 1 - 10:34 AM

The sale of the New York Islanders has been approved by the NHL Board of Governors.

The deal isn't finalized yet, but it's certainly heading in that direction. If all goes as planned, Jonathan Ledecky and Scott Malkin will be purchasing a minority stake in the team for now and then assume control from current owner Charles Wang in two years. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman didn't have a problem with the two-year delay before power is fully transferred, noting that it "provides an orderly transition, which was important to Charles."
Oct 1 - 8:45 AM

Jonathan Drouin (thumb) was on the ice Tuesday at practice in a no-contact jersey.

He's hopeful that he'll be ready to play when the Lightning open the regular season on Oct. 9 versus Florida. "I'm feeling better," Drouin said. "There's still a little bit of pain, but we're going in the right direction. A couple weeks left and I'm sure I'll be fine by then. Progress has been really good."
Sep 30 - 5:49 PM

Coach Ken Hitchcock said that Patrik Berglund will start the year on a line with David Backes and T.J. Oshie.

Berglund didn't have a successful transition from center to the wing last season, but the Blues feel it was because he wasn't given a chance to solidify himself anywhere. Perhaps a move alongside a pair of talented players will help in that regard.
Sep 30 - 4:52 PM

Alexander Steen (undisclosed) will get into St. Louis' lineup on Tuesday night.

He was held out of the team's previous two preseason contests after he got "banged up" in a scrimmage. Steen is excited to be seeing game action even if it is just the exhibition schedule. He's slated to play with Paul Stastny and Joakim Lindstrom.
Sep 30 - 4:35 PM

Eric Staal has recovered from his core muscle injury and is expected to suit up in Tuesday's exhibition game against St. Louis.

"It's been good," Staal said of his progress in training camp thus far. "I'm ready to get into game action to test that and see how it feels, but I foresee no issues moving forward." It will be his first preseason game.
