The Vegas Golden Knights have placed James Neal (illness) on injured reserve.

This means that Neal will be out for tonight's clash against the Vancouver Canucks. This will be the third consecutive game that he misses. The 30-year-old has 24 goals and 39 points in 58 games this season. The move also allows Vegas to add another player to their roster via trade if they feel the need to do so.

Patric Hornqvist (lower body) will play in Friday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The injury forced Hornqvist to miss each of Pittsburgh's last eight games. He'll skate on a line with Carl Hagelin and Evgeni Malkin. Hornqvist has 16 goals and 31 points in 49 games this season.

Jordan Staal (personal) won't play in Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Hurricanes said that he's going to miss the game for family reasons. The 29-year-old has 14 goals and 34 points in 60 games this season. It's unclear if he'll be available for Saturday's game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Nashville Predators GM David Poile says the team will not trade top prospect Eeli Tolvanen.

Even though he hasn't played in an NHL game yet, it appears as though Tolvanen was a steal at 30th overall in the 2017 Entry Draft. The 18-year-old was terrific at the Olympics for Finland and he's put up 17 goals and 17 assists in 47 KHL games, which is pretty impressive for a teenager. There's a chance Tolvanen could sign a contract with Nashville before the end of the regular season. He's one of the best prospects in the game right now.

The Derick Brassard trade is reportedly still likely to happen.

The NHL reportedly rejected what would have been a three-way trade sending Brassard to Pittsburgh after Ottawa first moved him to Vegas. Having Brassard hop around like that would have provided the Penguins will additional cap relief as both the Senators and Golden Knights could retain part of his salary. After the NHL vetoed the trade, the three teams have reportedly begun reworking the deal and we could see a resolution to this whole weird roller coaster in the not too distant future.
Feb 23 - 6:27 PM

The NHL has reportedly rejected the Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to acquire Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators.

The trade was originally reported as being Brassard in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick, Filip Gustavsson, and Ian Cole. However, Brassard comes with a $5 million annual cap hit through 2018-19, which is a lot for the Penguins to cope with, so the idea apparently was that Brassard would first get sent to Vegas so that both Ottawa and Vegas could retain part of his cap hit. Vegas might have also gotten Cole out of the arrangement given that Ottawa likely was interested in flipping the defenseman anyways and perhaps the Golden Knights would have sent something Ottawa's way as additional compensation. Perhaps the NHL saw this as an attempt to circumvent the salary cap the salary cap by having more of Brassard's salary retained than was otherwise possible in a standard trade. If this report is true then the Penguins and Senators will have to restructure the deal if it is to survive. Whatever happens, this is one of the craziest trade sagas in recent memory.

Darcy Kuemper will play between the pipes on Sunday.

It will be Kuemper's first start with the Arizona Coyotes. They acquired him from Los Angeles on Wednesday in exchange for Tobias Reider and Scott Wedgewood. After getting him, the Coyotes promptly signed Kuemper to a two-year, $3.7 million extension.

The Derick Brassard will reportedly be more complicated than initially thought.

It looked like the Ottawa Senators dealt Brassard to Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick, Filip Gustavsson, and Ian Cole. That's all probably still true, but what's changed is that Brassard might be passing through another team, potentially Vegas, on his way to Pittsburgh. Why? So that more than one team can retain some of Brassard's salary/cap hit before he reaches the Penguins. Keep in mind that Brassard comes with a $5 million annual cap hit through 2018-19, which is hard for the Penguins to cope with under their current cap restraints. Involving more teams might also give Ottawa an immediate opportunity to flip Cole, which is something that the Senators probably wanted to do anyways. We're going to continue to list Brassard as with the Penguins as it seems that that's happening, but keep in mind that more information and components about this trade could still be revealed.

Rick Nash will be a healthy scratch again on Friday.

This will be Nash's second straight game in the press box. The Rangers are keeping him out of the lineup to prevent an injury while they attempt to trade him.
Feb 23 - 5:14 PM

Alexandar Georgiev will play between the pipes Friday night.

Interesting. Henrik Lundqvist has struggled terribly so we can understand the Rangers' desire to give him a break and some time to work on his game during practices. However, they're asking Georgiev to start for the second time in as many nights. That's a tall order for someone who just made his NHL debut on Thursday. To be fair, Georgiev was great in that contest, stopping 38 of 40 shots in the Rangers' 3-1 loss to Montreal.

Chris Kreider (rib surgery) will make his return on Friday.

Kreider was last able to play on Dec. 27. He had been diagnosed with a blood clot in his arm and that led to him having rib resection surgery on Jan. 7. Before all that happened, he had 11 goals and 22 points in 37 contests this season.
