Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan wants to re-sign Dave Bolland.

"I'd like to get him signed," Shanahan said. "He's the type of player I like, the type of player we need. This is a guy we want to have back. Dave (Leafs GM Nonis) knows I want him back. But any time you are a UFA, there are other factors involved. He's got to want to play for us, as well." If Bolland is still seeking a new contract in the neighborhood of seven years at $5 million per season then he's unlikely stay in Toronto and he may not get many takers on the open market either at that price. Bolland missed most of the 2013-14 campaign after a skate sliced a tendon on the outside of his ankle.

Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock is hoping some of his young defensemen push for jobs during training camp.

"I’m hoping (Xavier) Ouellet, (Alexey) Marchenko, (Matthias) Backman and (Ryan) Sproul all have a chance to push for jobs," said Babcock. "We added depth up front last year. We’d like to do the same on the back, but they have to be ready." All four prospects could potentially return to the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids this year, but it looks like Detroit will give each player a serious chance to earn a roster spot with the big club.

Sven Andrighetto hopes to stick with the Montreal Canadiens this season but there probably isn’t a roster spot for him.

The Habs don’t have many openings at the forward position and that is definitely playing against Andrighetto. The 21-year-old Swiss forward had a good year with the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate in Hamilton last season registering 17 goals and 44 points in 64 games. "Of course I could the transition (to the NHL)," said Andrighetto. "I’m here to make the team, after that we’ll see what happens. There’s always something I can learn in Hamilton but I’m here to make the team." Andrighetto will likely start the year in Hamilton, but he’s a candidate for a call-up if the Habs suffer any injuries to their top-six forwards.

Brayden Schenn took over the top spot at center in training camp Saturday.

Schenn was playing on the left side on the top line but moved over to center with the injury suffered by Claude Giroux on Saturday. Michael Raffl took over Schenn's spot on the left side with R.J. Umberger moving up the left wing depth chart to play alongside Vincent Lecavalier and Jason Akeson on the second unit. Expect Schenn to move back to the left side when Giroux returns to action in two-four weeks.

Ryan Kesler's play during the first two days of training camp has impressed coach Bruce Boudreau.

And why shouldn't he as Kesler has been a strong center in the NHL for the past six seasons for the Canucks before the off-season trade that sent him to Anaheim. "He gives us new varieties of things to do," Boudreau said. "As far as matchups go, if a team was matching up against (Ryan) Getzlaf's line, we didn't have that other big center that you needed to match up against their number one line. That's one of the ways he's going to come in very handy." Look for a big season from Kesler as he is rejuvenated in Southern California.

CSKA Moscow of the KHL is set to offer Ryan Johansen a one-year, $5 million deal, according to TSN’s Farhan Lalji.

Lalji reports that CSKA’s offer, which will occur Saturday night, is the seventh Johansen has received from a KHL team. The Blue Jackets center is not expected to take any of them, despite the ongoing contract stalemate with his NHL club. Reports have indicated that Johansen and the Blue Jackets are at least $2-3 million off per season.

Alex Ovechkin is being moved back to the left wing this season.

New Capitals coach Barry Trotz will work to help Ovechkin become a more complete player and the first step will be a move back to his off wing. "He's better on the right side a little bit defensively, but his talent is on the left side," Trotz said. "And so if I'm going to maximize his talent, I need to get him on the left side. Now if he doesn't want to adjust defensively playing the left side, then we'll talk about maybe moving him back to the right. The stuff that he does on the left side, there's no coach on the planet who can teach (it). If he's willing to learn, I can teach him the other stuff." The Capitals captain had 51 goals and 28 points last season, but it came with a minus-35 rating.

Ryan Johansen’s agent Kurt Overhardt submitted a proposal to the Blue Jackets for a two-year deal worth less than $5 million per year, according to NY Post’s Larry Brooks.

Brooks said the offer was made Thursday, so obviously it’s not something the Blue Jackets were intrigued by. Team president John Davidson has said that the Blue Jackets would not budge off a two-year deal at $3 million a year as Johansen does not have arbitration rights. The 22-year-old broke out last season with 33 goals and 63 points. An agreement doesn't appear imminent, but these situations tend to resolve themselves quickly once there's a compromise.

Evander Kane believes he can become a 50-goal scorer.

Kane tallied a career-high 30 goals during the 2011-12 campaign, but he dipped to just 19 last year. While talented, it’s going to be a difficult feat for him to accomplish; Alexander Ovechkin was the only player to do it last season and Kane has topped the 50-point mark just once, let alone get close to 50 goals. "I said when I got drafted that I can score 50 and I know I can score 50," said Kane. "Playing with the right guys and playing with those guys consistently and obviously staying healthy is a big part of it too. The sky is the limit." More realistic expectations are 25 goals and 55 points, with the upside for more.

Boone Jenner will move to center for the Blue Jackets, at least initially.

With Ryan Johansen (unsigned) not with the team, the Blue Jackets have decided to shift Jenner to his natural position for Columbus’ first preseason game. "If Johansen’s here, we may have (Jenner) on the wing but we’d still be trying him at center," coach Todd Richards said. "You take a player like that, a fierce competitor. ... I haven’t seen him take a draw yet, but I bet he takes a draw like he plays a game. You better be ready." In his rookie season, Jenner had 16 goals and 29 points during 72 regular-season games, with five points in six playoff contests. The 21-year-old has a very bright future.

Mike Richards was "a little bit" worried the Kings would buy out his contract this offseason.

Richards had 41 points last season, and six more seasons left on a deal that carries a $5.75 million cap hit. "A little bit," Richards said. "I like it here, my family likes it here, my girlfriend likes it here, and I want to be here. Obviously, on the ice speaks for itself with the team that we have. You know, just everything about it, I wanted to be here. Whether I thought [a buyout] would happen or not, I don’t know if I ever did; but there’s always that possibility that makes you nervous." It wouldn’t be a shock to see Richards return to the 20-goal mark and reach at least 50 points next season.
Sep 20 - 7:52 PM

Jonathan Drouin didn't practice on Saturday because of an upper-body injury and he's listed as day-to-day.

"This is by no means serious. ... He'll be back next week at some point," coach Jon Cooper said via the Lightning's Twitter account. He should see plenty of action in the preseason, as the Bolts get a feel of where to start him once the regular season begins. Drouin will have plenty of value if he can earn a spot alongside Steve Stamkos, but he started camp outside of the team's top-six group.
