Center Nathan MacKinnon was awarded the Calder Trophy Tuesday, given to the NHL's top rookie.

This news hardly comes as a shock to the hockey world, as MacKinnon entered the night an overwhelming favorite to take home the hardware. With 63 points in his rookie campaign, the Colorado forward shone brighter than all other first-year players in 2013-14.

Dallas GM Jim Nill intends to sign Jamie Benn to an extension after July 1.

"Jamie's not going anywhere," he said. "We'll get something done." Benn has one more season left on a five-year, $26.25 million deal and he will get a significant pay bump. The Stars captain has topped 85 points in each of his last two seasons and he tallied 41 goals in 2015-16.

Marc-Andre Fleury is expected to start the 2016-17 season with Pittsburgh, according to Sportsnet's John Shannon.

He received the news from Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford. Fleury's name has come up in plenty of trade rumors, but it doesn't look like anything is imminent on that front.

Expect a lot of interest in unrestricted free agent Kyle Okposo.

The veteran can listen to offers from NHL teams on Saturday and we know of at least five squads that are allegedly rather keen on signing the winger to a new deal. Detroit, St. Louis, Winnipeg, L.A. and Minnesota are said to be in on Okposo. Stay tuned.

The Florida Panthers have traded Dmitry Kulikov to the Buffalo Sabres for Mark Pysyk.

The Sabres also acquired a second-round pick (No. 33) in the deal, while the Panthers received picks No. 38 and No. 89. Kulikov became an extra piece when the Panthers inked Keith Yandle to a contract. Kulikov becomes a top-four defenseman for the Sabres and should take his offensive game to the next level in Buffalo. Look for a 30 point campaign from the defenseman.

Detroit has traded Pavel Datsyuk's contract to Arizona.

The Wings sent Datsyuk, who will play in the KHL in 2016-17, and the No. 16 pick in the draft to the Coyotes for Joe Vitale, the 20th overall selection and a second round pick (No. 53). Arizona used the 16th overall pick to take Jakob Chychrun.
Jun 24 - 9:19 PM

Brian Elliott has been traded to the Calgary Flames in exchange for the 35th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

If the Flames re-sign Elliott then the Blues will also get a 2018 third-round selection. Elliott was superb during the 2015-16 campaign and the Flames were desperate to add a netminder. He posted a 23-8-6 record with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage. Elliott had to share time with Jake Allen in St. Louis, but he'll be the top option with Calgary.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have taken Pierre-Luc Dubois with the third overall pick.

There was plenty of speculation that Columbus could trade this pick and that they weren't enamored with Jesse Puljujarvi, but going with Dubois is still a bit surprising based on the rankings. However, they have a strong prospect in Pierre-Luc Dubois, who followed up his 10-goal, 45-point campaign in 2014-15 with a 45-goal and 99-point campaign as an 18-year-old. Already 6'2" and 200 lbs, Dubois dazzles with his ability to command the ice by proactively looking for passing and shooting lanes. He’s drawn favorable comparisons to Anze Kopitar as an ideal No. 1 center, though there’s debate as to Dubois’ actual defensive prowess. Be that as it may, his versatility and refined toolbox make him a tantalizingly mature forward who can play both center and wing.

The Winnipeg Jets have taken Patrik Laine with the second overall pick.

If there’s anyone that could have challenged Auston Matthews to be the first overall pick, it’s Patrick Laine - and he’ll tell you that himself. The self-appointed "best player in the draft" certainly has the resume and the skillset to make good on his claim. Internationally for Finland he posted 22 goals in 24 games, including contests at U-18, U-20 and the WHC. He also captured MVP honors in the SM-Liiga playoff and WHC to boot. The 18-year-old winger comes in at 6’4" and 210 lbs with a powerful stride, deft hands, keen hockey-sense, and the ability to put the puck through the net from anywhere on the ice. The Jets may have missed out on Matthews, but they can't be disappointed with the opportunity to have Laine for years to come. He could be a star for them in the not too distant future.

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired Andrew Shaw for the 39th and 45th overall picks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Shaw is eligible to become a restricted free agent on July 1. There was a time when it looked like Chicago would be able to re-sign him given that the Blackhawks freed some cap space by dealing Bryan Bickell to Carolina. However, it came out Friday afternoon that Shaw is reportedly seeking an average annual salary of $4.5 million, which likely priced Chicago out. He had 14 goals and 34 points in 78 games in 2015-16.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected Auston Matthews with the first pick of the 2016 NHL Draft.

The Maple Leafs need a number one center and not too many are going to be better than Matthews who could have gone second overall last season had he been born two days earlier. The 18-year-old posted 24 goals and 46 points in 36 games as he played in Switzerland last season. He also posted 13 goals and 20 points in 17 international games for the Americans last season to boot. Much like Connor McDavid before him, Matthews is expected to be a true No. 1 center immediately and become the unquestioned cornerstone of his franchise for the next generation.
Jun 24 - 7:18 PM

The Florida Panthers have acquired Reto Berra from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Rocco Grimaldi.

And just like that, the Panthers have their backup goaltender. Berra couldn't stick with the Avalanche in the NHL for the entire 2015-16 campaign, but that was due to a mixture of injury woes and Calvin Pickard's ascent rather than him struggling on the ice. When Berra did play for Colorado he posted a 2.41 GAA and .922 save percentage in 14 games. He has one season left on his three-year, $4.35 million contract.
