The Florida Panthers have taken Aaron Ekblad with the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Ekblad is a confident player who has NHL size, toughness, skating ability and the smarts to play in the NHL next year, and eventually become a top-pair stalwart. He is an excellent two-way blueliner, with a three-zone game and a balance between his offensive and defensive game. Ekblad is skilled with the puck, his shot is heavy and accurate and he possesses great vision and poise. He complements his offensive game well with ruggedness, an active stick and solid positioning on the defensive side. He is very hard on himself and could stand to be more physically assertive at the next level. In 2013-14, Barrie's captain was named the OHL's most outstanding defenseman, leading all rearguards with 23 goals and finishing tied for fifth with 53 points. There was a lot of speculation that the Panthers might deal this pick, but in Ekblad they're getting a player that will make an immediate impact in the NHL.

Taylor Hall scored on a penalty shot, added an assist and recorded a plus-two rating in helping the Edmonton Oilers edge the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 Monday night.

It was the Oilers' first victory of the season after the worst start in franchise history at 0-4-1. Hall's goal was his fourth of the season. The left winger was awarded his penalty shot at 14:57 of the second period. He assisted earlier in the second on a pretty backhanded goal by defenseman Justin Schultz, his first of the season. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also notched his first of the season, the game winner at 16:35 of the third period. It was set up nicely after an interception in the Lightning's zone by Justin Eberle, who quickly turned around and passed the puck to Nugent-Hopkins. Eberle's assist was his third of the season.

Jimmy Howard (groin) will be between the pipes for Detroit on Tuesday night in Montreal.

He was on 48-hour injured reserve while he recovered from a groin injury, but he's recovered now and ready to go. Get him back in your lineup if you normally would.

He racked up eight points (four goals, four assists) in three games to lead the NHL in scoring. Seguin's fifth career hat trick came in a 4-2 victory over Columbus last Tuesday and collected a career-high four assists in a 6-5 overtime defeat to Philadelphia this past Saturday.

Patrik Nemeth (arm) will miss the rest of the regular season.

That's troubling news for the promising 22-year-old defenseman. Nemeth's arm was cut by a skate in Saturday's game against Philadelphia and it will cost him the remainder of the 2014-15 campaign after just five appearances.
Oct 20 - 2:03 PM

Victor Hedman (hand) is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks.

That's a significant blow to the Lightning. Hedman was off to a fantastic start this season, with three goals and seven points in five games, after he broke out offensively last year. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a fractured finger.
