Hurricanes GM Ron Francis expects Alexander Semin (wrist) to be ready for training camp based on the information he's been given.

"My understanding was that he was coming back to train," Francis said. "He's training, according to his agent, a couple times a day and doing therapy on the wrist as well. There were no issues with the wrist, as far as I was told." A report surfaced about a week-and-a-half ago that Semin hadn't fully recovered yet from off-season wrist surgery, but Francis' optimism is a much better sign.

Brayden Schenn is the front runner for the job as the first line left winger with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers dealt Scott Hartnell who played on the left side with Claude Giroux and Jacob Voracek on the first line. The Flyers are deep down the middle with Giroux, Schenn, Vincent Lecavalier, Sean Couturier as well as rookie Scott Laughton so it makes sense that someone moves to the wing. Others being considered are: Michael Raffl, R.J. Umberger and Lecavalier. Schenn had 20 goals and 41 points last season and his numbers would jump exponentially if he gets the gig on the first line.

The New York Rangers could name Ryan McDonagh their new captain as early as Thursday.

Ryan Callahan was the old captain of the Rangers but was dealt during the 2013-14 season to Tampa Bay and the Rangers did not name another captain for the rest of the season. "I think I've progressed into being a go-to guy, someone teammates can look up to and someone they can count on," McDonagh said. "I think guys see I'm willing to do whatever it takes to win... (Captain) is a big responsibility, too. It's not just about on the ice but how you carry yourself off of it and represent the organization." McDonagh had a big offensive season for New York in 2013-14 with 14 goals and 43 points in 77 games with a plus-11 rating and 13 power play points. He should be a lower end number one defenseman in a 12 team fantasy league.

Leon Draisaitl scared everyone on Friday when he left the ice favoring his right leg.

Everyone in Edmonton was holding their respective breaths but it turned out to only be a leg cramp for the third overall pick in the 2014 Draft. Draisaitl will need more than a day to recover as even a couple bottles of an energy drink did not help but he should be fine for the start of training camp this week. "I've never had it that bad. I had it once in one game in the third period last season in Prince Albert and that's it. I had a Powerade and after that I was totally fine. I had two bottles Friday and it wouldn't get better. It was pretty scary." Draisaitl sat out Saturday's game. Look for a big season from Draisaitl as he is one of the favorites for the Calder Trophy.

After undergoing offseason surgery, it appears that Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick is just now facing shots in practice environments.

In other words, he might not get much/any time in the preseason and could conceivably even start the 2014-15 season a bit slow. Martin Jones may be in line for extra early appearances. Quick is still a valuable pick, particularly considering the team in front of him, but keep an eye out for setbacks.

While it doesn't sound like much progress has been made - Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen is leaving discussions to his assistant - at least the Ryan Johansen contract talks have resumed.

He scored more goals (33) and points (63) in the 2013-14 season than he had in his previous two seasons combined, so it's easy to see why there's an impasse. At 22, missing a training camp or even a few regular season games wouldn't be ideal, but at least consider a slow start a possibility when pondering the up-and-coming Blue Jackets forward.

Josh Rimer is reporting that the New Jersey Devils are giving Jordin Tootoo a professional tryout offer.

Tootoo played for the Detroit Red Wings last season and was bought out of his contract in June. There were rumors that the Winnipeg Jets offered him a two-way contract that he turned down before agreeing to go to camp with the Devils. Tootoo has value in pools that use penalty minutes but of course he will have to crack the Devils roster to have any value.

Sam Bennett set up Josh Jooris for an empty net goal in the Flames 6-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets rookies.

Bennett was taken fourth overall in the 2014 Draft and this was his first game at the professional level, albeit in a rookie game against the Jets. He was a force as he played a strong two-way game. Bennett could use another year in junior hockey so do not be surprised if he is sent back to the OHL before the start of the NHL season.

Alex Ovechkin felt the firing of head coach Adam Oates and GM George McPhee over the summer was a "wake-up call."

Ovechkin also believes it was a signal to the players that they have to improve or the next set of changes will be focused on the team's roster. "I'm pretty sure this organization and the fans is tired to losing and not show exactly what we can do," Ovechkin said. "That's why we made the changes." Ovechkin will turn 29 on Sept. 17 and while he's had a lot of personal success, the Capitals haven't gotten past the second round of the playoffs during his tenure. Washington knows it needs to take advantage of Ovechkin's talents while he's still in his prime.

Pekka Rinne said his hip "feels great."

"I had a good summer. I worked hard and stayed healthy," he said. "I'm just really excited for this upcoming season. I feel like I'm ready to go. I still have to pay attention to it, but I don't have to change anything, I don't have to skip any training because of that. It feels normal, I feel like I have the strength back in my legs this summer. It feels great and it's nice not to think about it all the time." Rinne has been dealing with a hip issue for the past two seasons and an infection limited him to 24 appearances last year. Don't let him slip too far on draft day, as he'll probably prove to be worth the risk.

Minnesota has inked Nino Niederreiter to a three-year, $8 million contract.

"I'm glad it's over and I'm part of the Wild family again," Niederreiter said. "I think it's all about now. The season's coming up and I think I found a way to score goals in the league and felt I got better and better as last season went on, so now I'm very happy to focus and not worry about the contract situation. Now I just want to go out there and play and really, really work on things." He notched 14 goals and 36 points, along with 175 hits, in 81 games last season during his first year with the Wild.

The NHL announced some rule changes for the upcoming season.

The league has cracked down on the 'Spin-O-Rama' move, which will no longer be allowed on penalty shots and in the Shootout. Other rule changes include increasing the trapezoid, new game misconduct categories, some expanding on video reviews, an amendment to the tripping infraction, fines for repeated embellishments and a change to try to stop delay tactics on faceoffs. Check the link to see some other rule additions and their explanations.
