Matthew Tkachuk has received a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In other words, Tkachuk can't play on Thursday, but is fine to return on Saturday. He's being punished for spearing Toronto's Matt Martin in Wednesday's game. The NHL noted that the spear itself wouldn't have warranted supplemental discipline, but the two factors that worked against Tkachuk are the fact that he was on the bench when he speared Martin and that Tkachuk was recently suspended over a similar incident.

Ray Emery drowned while swimming with friends Sunday morning.

Emery was just 35-years-old. He started his career with the Ottawa Senators and went on to also play for the Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, and Chicago Blackhawks. At one point his career was in jeopardy due to avascular necrosis, but he underwent hip surgery and was able to continue playing. He was a Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee in 2011 in recognition of what he had to overcome. He also helped Chicago win the Jennings Trophy in 2013 by posting a 1.94 GAA and .922 save percentage in 21 contests. We'd like to extend our condolences to Emery's friends and family.

Phillip Danault has signed a three-year, $9.249 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens.

Danault had eight goals and 25 points in 52 games last season. He had an arbitration hearing scheduled on July 20, so Montreal and Danault were coming on the deadline to agree to terms in order to avoid getting the arbitrator involved.

Oliver Bjorkstrand has signed a three-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Columbus didn't reveal the financial terms of Bjorkstrand's contract, but it's reportedly worth a total of $7.5 million. He scored 11 goals and 40 points in 82 contests last season. Bjorkstrand was a restricted free agent after completing his entry-level contract.

Ryan Murray has accepted the Columbus Blue Jackets' one-year, qualifying offer.

He was taken with the second overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, but hasn't developed as hoped, in part due to some bad luck when it's come to injuries. Murray had a goal and 12 points in 44 games last season. His qualifying offer is worth $2.825 million for the 2018-19 campaign.

Devin Shore has signed a two-year, $4.6 million contract with the Dallas Stars.

Shore and the Stars had an arbitration hearing set for July 20, so this agreement allows them to avoid that process. He had 11 goals and 32 points in 82 games last season.

Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a three-year, $21 million contract extension with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Fleury will first complete the final season of his current four-year, $23 million contract. He'll be 37-years-old by the time his extension expires, making this deal something of a risk. However, he played a key role with the Golden Knights last season with his 2.24 GAA and .927 save percentage in 46 contests.

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Marcus Kruger from the Arizona Coyotes.

This is the second time Kruger has been traded this summer. He had a goal and six points in 48 games with Carolina in 2017-18 before being sent to the AHL. It was later revealed that he had been playing through a sports hernia so he's a potential bounce back candidate this season. Kruger is returning to Chicago after being apart from the organization for only one season.

The Arizona Coyotes have acquired Marian Hossa, Vinnie Hinostroza, Jordan Oesterle and a 2019 third-round pick from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Marcus Kruger, MacKenzie Entwistle, Jordan Maletta, Andrew Campbell and a 2019 fifth-round draft pick.

Hossa isn't expected to ever play again, so this part of the trade is about moving his cap hit. He comes with a $5,275,000 cap hit for each of the next three seasons, but is only owed $1 million annually in salary, so this is a cheap way for Arizona to make sure that they remain above the salary floor.
Jul 12 - 3:12 PM

The Winnipeg Jets have signed Connor Hellebuyck to a six-year, $37 million contract.

Hellebuyck had filed for salary arbitration, but the hearing is no longer necessary. He finished second in Vezina Trophy voting after posting a 44-11-9 record, 2.36 GAA, and .924 save percentage in 67 games last season. While there's certainly some risk here given that Hellebuyck didn't do nearly as well in 2016-17, this also could prove to be a great contract for Winnipeg if he can maintain his level of play from last season.
Jul 12 - 9:50 AM

Anthony Mantha has signed a two-year, $6.6 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

Mantha scored 24 goals and 48 points in 80 games this season. Those numbers were a step up from his 2016-17 totals, but he should develop further so it makes sense that he ended up with a bridge contract. Mantha was a restricted free agent this summer and he will be again after this deal expires.
Jul 11 - 4:57 PM

Patrick Maroon has agreed to a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the St. Louis Blues.

Maroon had 17 goals and 43 points in 74 games last season. This signing will allow Maroon to play for his hometown team for the first time in his career. "This is a one-year opportunity for him to come back, hopefully play with some really good centermen and get back to that 27-goal performance he had in Edmonton, or close to it," Blues GM Doug Armstrong said. "We think he can help our team. I talked to some of our players about him, competing against him, and they spoke very highly about how hard he was to play against, how difficult he was to move in those high traffic areas. It's just another player we add to our group that makes us a little better than we were yesterday."
