According to sources, Arizona has reached a verbal agreement with Oliver Ekman-Larsson on a contract extension.

Ekman-Larsson's new deal is believed to be eight years at $8-plus million per season. Reports that the Coyotes were close to locking up their stud defenseman surfaced on Monday night. The contract can't become official until July 1.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored three goals in Saturday's 7-3 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Bjorkstrand got the Blue Jackets on the board in the second frame when they were down 4-0 and he also cut his team's deficit to 5-3 in the third frame. The 23-year-old scored 11 goals and 40 points in his first full year in the NHL in 2017-18, so the Jackets will be expecting more from him in year two. He could flirt with the 50-point mark this year.

The New Jersey Devils have re-signed Miles Wood to a four-year deal worth $11 million.

The deal comes with an annual average value of $2.75 million. Wood is a strong, two-way forward who plays with a physical edge to his game. "We are excited to have Miles under contract for the next four years," said Devils GM Ray Shero. "With his style of play, he's a big part of what we are collectively building here in New Jersey, now and in the future." The 23-year-old had a career-high 19 goals and 32 points in 76 games with the Devils last season. He won't have any value in standard fantasy leagues, but he's an important part of the Devils roster.

Daniel Sprong will skate on a line with Sidney Crosby during Saturday's preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Sprong is arguably the Penguins' most talented prospect. He managed to pick up two goals and one assist in eight games with the Pens last season. He also added 32 goals and 65 points in 65 AHL games in 2017-18. If Sprong opens up the season on Crosby's line, he'll have a rock-solid fantasy value in all leagues. Jake Guentzel is the other forward skating on that line.

Alex Galchenyuk (groin) could be dealing with a serious injury.

It was first reported that Galchenyuk missed practice due to a 'maintenance' day, but it appears to be much more than that. "Alex is going to meet with our medical team and undergo further evaluation," head coach Rick Tocchet said. "We’ll know something next week with him." Usually if a player is dealing with a minor injury, he'll be labeled as day-to-day but that doesn't appear to be the case here. Arizona's center depth will be tested with Dylan Strome (upper body) and Christian Dvorak (lower body) also banged up.

Sean Couturier left Saturday morning's practice early and was followed by the team's trainer.

Couturier is coming off a career-year, but played through a knee injury in the playoffs that has hampered him so far through camp. In his place, Jori Lehtera moved onto the top line between Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny. Stay tuned for an update on Couturier.

Corey Crawford (concussion) is unlikely to be ready to start the regular season.

Crawford still hasn't practiced with his teammates and given that the Blackhawks' regular season opener is October 4th, his chances of being ready to go once the campaign starts are dwindling even though he has been making some progress at training camp.

Dustin Byfuglien scored a pair of goals in Friday's 4-3 preseason win over the Calgary Flames.

Byfuglien cut Calgary's second-period lead to 3-2 before scoring the game-winning goal just 26 seconds into overtime. The Jets defender finished the night with an even rating and four shots on goal in 27:10 of ice time. The 33-year-old had 45 points in 69 games last season. If he stays healthy, he should be able to surpass those numbers this year.
Sep 21 - 11:45 PM

John Tavares scored a pair of goals during Friday's 5-3 preseason win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Tavares' first goal gave the Maple Leafs a 3-1 lead just under four minutes into the opening frame. He then added an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation. Tavares was the biggest free-agent acquisition of the off-season and he should be able to light it up with his new team. The 28-year-old had 37 goals and 84 points in 82 games with the Islanders last season. Expect Tavares to be a point-per-game player in Toronto this season.

Jaccob Slavin picked up a goal and two assists in Friday's 5-1 win over the Washington Capitals.

Slavin set up first-period goals by Valentin Zykov and Jordan Staal before adding one of his own on the man-advantage in the third frame. Slavin finished the night with a plus-2 rating, one shot on goal and one hit in 23:41 of ice time. The 24-year-old is one of the more underrated defensemen in the league. He had 30 points in 82 games last season.

Mike Green is fighting a disease that's attacking his liver.

Green had been dealing with fatigue issues that led to the Red Wings' doctors telling him to stay off the ice while the problem was investigated further. They now have more information, but the next step for Green will be to see an infectious disease specialist. There isn't a timetable for his recovery yet.

Loui Eriksson has sustained a bone bruise in his leg.

Eriksson is regarded as week-to-week as a result, so his availability for the start of the season is very much in question. He had 10 goals and 23 points in 50 contests last season.
