Jeremy Bonderman - S - DET
Jeremy Bonderman (shoulder) is doing well in his preparation for the 2010 season, according to teammate Justin Verlander. Bonderman battled shoulder issues last year and gave up 10 earned runs in the 10 1/3 innings he was able to pitch. "Bondo got down there about a week or so ago, and we play catch together most of the time, and he's got a lot of life on his ball," Verlander told the Detroit Free Press Thursday. "That's something I haven't seen from him in the last year or two." Feb. 5 - 9:07 am et. Source: Detroit Free Press

Jarrod Washburn - S - DET
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, free agent lefty Jarrod Washburn may opt to retire if he doesn't find a suitable offer. Washburn has drawn only mild interest this winter, but it seems silly to think he can't find some kind of low-base, incentive-laden salary. Sure, the 35-year-old had a tough time down the stretch, tallying an ugly 7.33 ERA in eight starts after being traded to the Tigers. But he was 9-9 overall with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts and there are plenty of desperate MLB clubs. Feb. 4 - 10:04 pm et. Source: FOXSports.com

Jarrod Washburn - S - DET
A source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com that free agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn hasn't ruled out a return to the Mariners. It's hard to believe he could rule anybody out at this stage of the game. At least Washburn would be available right away, while Erik Bedard won't be a factor until at least May. The 35-year-old southpaw has also been linked to the Twins, while the Mets and Cubs could also use a veteran in their respective rotations. Feb. 4 - 5:09 pm et. Source: Jon Paul Morosi on Twitter

Justin Verlander - S - DET
Tigers signed RHP Justin Verlander to a five-year, $80 million contract. The new deal buys out his final two years of arbitration and his first three years of free agency. Consistent with the competitive spirit of Verlander, his contract beats out the five-year, $78 million deal the Mariners gave Felix Hernandez last month. It's hard to argue against him. Verlander, who turns 27 later this month, has quickly emerged as one of the game's top workhorses, leading the American League with 240 innings pitched, 269 strikeouts and 19 wins last season. He has logged at least 200 innings in each of the last three seasons and is just tapping into his considerable potential. The term "ace" is thrown around pretty liberally, but Verlander has shown that he can be a true leader of a staff, even at a young age. Feb. 4 - 3:20 pm et.

Justin Verlander - S - DET
The Associated Press is reporting that right-hander Justin Verlander and the Tigers have agreed to a five-year deal worth $80 million. Verlander just completed a 19-9 season, posting a 3.45 ERA and an American League-leading 269 strikeouts. The extension covers his final two seasons of arbitration and first three years of free agency. The 25-year-old was reportedly seeking six years, but has apparently settled for five although it is possible an option is attached to the deal. The five-year, $78 million deal Seattle struck with Felix Hernandez served as a guideline during talks. Feb. 3 - 7:46 pm et. Source: Associated Press via MSNBC

Justin Verlander - S - DET
A source told Yahoo's Jeff Passan that the Tigers are working with Justin Verlander on a five-year contract extension worth around $75 million. Felix Hernandez's five-year, $78 million extension with the Mariners has sort of set a guideline for the Tigers' talks with Verlander. The Detroit ace is apparently asking for a six-year commitment, but GM Dave Dombrowski isn't likely to go that high. Either way, the extension would cover his last two seasons of arbitration-eligibility and at least three years of free agency. Verlander, 25, went 19-9 last season with a 3.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and an American League-leading 269 strikeouts. Jan. 29 - 2:08 pm et. Source: Jeff Passan on Twitter

Jarrod Washburn - S - DET
Jarrod Washburn only wants to pitch in "a limited number of places" in 2010, according to a source of Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, and the Twins and Mariners top the list. That could be the extent of the list, actually, as Morosi heard from another source that said he'd be surprised if Washburn signs anywhere but Minnesota and Seattle. This late in the game there aren't many teams that would meet Washburn's asking price anyway, so it's not as though he is sifting through a mountain of offers -- in other words, the Twins/Mariners assertion isn't out on a limb. As for other teams that could attempt to persuade the veteran left-hander, the Mets and Cubs are still looking for starting pitching, and Washburn has reportedly received interest from six teams total. | Joel Zumaya - R - DET |
Joel Zumaya (shoulder) is scheduled to throw off a mound this week. Zumaya underwent surgery to remove a bone shard from a stress fracture in his right shoulder in August, ending his 2009 season a few weeks early. But his rehab has been going well and he should be on pace with the rest of Detroit's relievers by the time spring training rolls around. Zumaya is expected to serve as an eighth-inning setup man for the Tigers this year. Jan. 25 - 7:11 pm et. Source: Jason Beck on Twitter

Jeff Larish - DH - DET
Tigers outrighted INF Jeff Larish to Triple-A Toledo. He was cleared in order to make room for the newly-signed Jose Valverde. Larish, 27, batted .216/.344/.446 with four home runs and seven RBI in 74 at-bats with the Tigers last season, but spent most of the year with Triple-A Toledo. He underwent season-ending surgery on his right wrist in September. Larish will stay with the team as a non-roster invitee. Jan. 25 - 12:24 pm et.

Dontrelle Willis - S - DET
Dontrelle Willis told Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press that he has suffered from a "serious lack of confidence." Willis disagrees with the Tigers' medical assessment of an anxiety disorder, but conceded that it got so bad that there were occasions last year when he was afraid of taking the mound, unsure of his ability to locate the strike zone. "I lost confidence in myself," Willis said. "I can admit that to myself now." After spending time at the Athletes' Performance Institute in Arizona this off-season, he's convinced that he'll approach the 2010 season with a better mental approach. He'll at least get a look for the fifth spot in the rotation during Spring Training, but there's little hope left for the 28-year-old to recapture his past magic. Jan. 24 - 1:43 pm et.
