| Scott Shaw - NYM |
2008 13th-round pick Scott Shaw pitched five hitless innings Saturday for Honolulu in the HWL. Shaw has allowed just one run and two hits in 11 2/3 innings so far. The Illinois product had a 2.80 ERA and a 79/15 K/BB ratio in 74 innings in the New York-Penn League after being drafted. He lacks big-time upside, but he's looking like a nice find for the Mets so far. |
| Ruben Tejada - NYM |
Ruben Tejada went 2-for-4 with two RBI on Friday and has hit in all eight of his games for Honolulu of the Hawaiian Winter League. The Mets have been extremely aggressive with Tejada, and he hit just .229/.293/.296 as an 18-year-old in the Florida State League this year. However, he has started off hot in Hawaii, putting together a .355/.400/.484 line in 31 at-bats. Unfortunately, he'll likely go right back to slumping next year if the Mets decide to push him up to Double-A for the beginning of the season. |
| Ambiorix Burgos - NYM |
According to the Associated Press, Ambiorix Burgos "will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women." "I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I’m not worried this will affect my career because I haven’t done anything," Burgos said. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims and fleeing, charges that can carry up to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident before turning himself in Tuesday. | Daniel Murphy - NYM |
Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Saguaros' second baseman in Tuesday's AFL action. Murphy was only adequate at third base in the minors, but the Mets want to see if he can emerge as a candidate to take over Luis Castillo next year. He probably wouldn't have a starting job in the outfield initially if he fails to establish himself at second base. |
| Jason Vargas - NYM |
Jason Vargas, who missed all season following hip surgery, pitched a scoreless inning for Peoria of the AFL on Tuesday. Vargas figures to be a long shot to make the Mets next spring. He's still just 25, but given that he had back-to-back very disappointing years before missing all of 2008, he has an awful lot of work to do before he'll again be taken very seriously. |
| Ambiorix Burgos - NYM |
Ambiorix Burgos turned himself in Tuesday night, a week after police say he was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. It's also come to light that the mother of one of the two victims accused Burgos of intentionally running her daughter over because she refused to go out with him. Eudosia Ruane, mother of 29-year-old Angely Fana, told The Associated Press she filed a report with police alleging homicide. Burgos has been formally accused of abandoning the victims and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. Source: The Associated Press |
| David Wright - NYM |
The Mets will have called a press conference for Sunday to announce manager Jerry Manuel's new two-year deal. A team option for 2011 will be included. "Jerry did a very good job taking over the club midseason, and we believe that he is the right person to manage our team and lead us to the postseason," Mets GM Omar Minaya said in a statement. |
| Johan Santana - NYM |
The Mets are in contract talks with Jerry Manuel and, according to the New York Daily News, insiders believe a deal could be done soon. Willie Randolph will make $2.25 million to sit idle in '09, so Manuel is probably pressing for similar money. He led the team to a 55-38 finish. Source: New York Daily News |
| Johan Santana - NYM |
As expected, the Mets announced Thursday that general manager Omar Minaya has agreed to a three-year contract extension. The deal runs through 2012, with team options for 2013 and 2014. In four seasons under Minaya the Mets have gone 357-291 (.551) while missing the playoffs three times, including an 89-73 record and second-place finish this year despite a $143 million payroll. "We obviously were not a very good team when Omar came on board and we think he deserves another chance to take us where we want to be," chief operating officer Fred Wilpon said. "Omar is our guy. We believe he has a plan to take us forward to where we need to be." Source: New York Daily News |
| Carlos Delgado - NYM |
The New York Daily News reports that the Mets are expected to pick up their $12 million option on Carlos Delgado for 2009. A no-brainer given Delgado's huge second half and .271/.353/.518 overall line with 38 homers and 115 RBI in 159 games. That he would have been due a $4 million buyout makes the decision even easier, although the newspaper speculates that the Mets picking up his option "won't preclude them from making the first baseman available via trade this winter."
