| Taylor Buchholz - NYM |
Taylor Buchholz plans to skip the 2012 season. Buchholz, a 30-year-old free agent, has been battling depression and anxiety issues for the past several months. "As of right now, Taylor is taking the year off," Buchholz's agent David Pasti told ESPNNewYork.com. "He's feeling great, but not ready to get back into baseball. He's taking it one day at a time." | Matt Tuiasosopo - NYM |
Mets signed INF-OF Matt Tuiasosopo to a minor league contract. It's not clear if he'll receive a spring training invite. Tuiasosopo has batted only .176/.234/.306 across 210 career plate appearances and hit just .226 with a .735 OPS in 116 games this past season at Triple-A Tacoma. He's turn only 26 in May, though, and was a decent prospect at one time. The odds are long that he'll win a roster spot. |
| Jason Isringhausen - NYM |
According to Dan Martin of the New York Post, the Mets don't expect to re-sign Jason Isringhausen. The Mets haven't ruled anything out, but a return is unlikely after the club upgraded their bullpen this offseason. "There probably isn’t a fit for him here," Martin was told by a source. "He’s been talking to other teams, and we think he’ll wind up elsewhere." Isringhausen, 39, posted a 4.05 ERA, seven saves and a 44/24 over 46 2/3 innings in 2011. He's currently sitting on 300 career saves.

| Chris Young - NYM |
Chris Young (shoulder) told Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com the he hopes to be pitching by April. Young, a free agent, is working his way back from surgery to repair a torn capsule muscle in his right shoulder last May. "I'm pretty excited,'' said Young. "My arm feels the best it has felt in quite some time.'' Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has previously expressed interest in bringing the veteran right-hander back, though he would almost certainly have to accept a minor league contract. | Justin Turner - NYM |
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies "remain strongly interested" in a trade for Mets' infielder Justin Turner. The Rockies' efforts to acquire Marco Sctuaro from the Red Sox hit a snag, but Renck calls Turner a "more attainable target" to play second base. We wouldn't argue with that. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reported last month that the Rockies and Mets were talking about a deal that would send Turner to Colorado in exchange for Eric Young, Jr. The 27-year-old infielder batted .260/.334/.356 with four homers, 51 RBI and a .690 OPS over 487 plate appearances with New York last season. As of now, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Nelson and D.J. LeMahieu figure to compete for the Rockies' starting second base job during spring training. Source: Denver Post |
| Johan Santana - NYM |
Mets manager Terry Collins said Friday that he's hoping to get 25 starts out of Johan Santana (shoulder) in 2012. The Mets are expecting Santana to be ready at the beginning of spring training, but general manager Sandy Alderson has labeled the left-hander as a "question mark" for Opening Day. Given that he's now 16 months removed from shoulder surgery but still can't be counted on for the start of the 2012 season, we'd have to consider 25 starts to be on the high end of projections for him. There's just no way of knowing until he starts letting it loose in spring training. Source: Adam Rubin on Twitter |
| David Wright - NYM |
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York was told that if David Wright is traded during the season, the acquiring team does not get a draft pick if he leaves as a free agent following the season. Wright is owed $15 million this season, but he could void his $16 million for 2013 in the event of a trade. Many have speculated that the Mets could trade the 29-year-old third baseman later this summer, but if Rubin's source is correct, they would likely get more value in return if they pick up his option next offseason before making a deal. This way, the acquiring team would get Wright for a full year and secure draft pick compensation if he leaves as a free agent. Of course, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has repeatedly said that he has no intention to deal Wright, but given the direction of the franchise, it's not an unrealistic scenario. | Manny Acosta - NYM |
The Mets and RHP Manny Acosta avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $875,000 contract. Acosta was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The 30-year-old right-hander pitched well in a late-game role for the Mets last season, posting a 3.45 ERA and 46/15 K/BB ratio over 47 innings. He should have a similar role in 2012. | Andres Torres - NYM |
Mets and OF Andres Torres avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.7 million contract. Torres had a disappointing 2011 campaign, batting just .221/.312/.330 with four homers and 19 RBI in 398 plate appearances. But he still managed to land a nice raise. Source: Adam Rubin on Twitter |
| Mike Pelfrey - NYM |
The Mets and RHP Mike Pelfrey avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.6875 million contract. Pelfrey registered a disappointing 4.74 ERA and 105/65 K/BB ratio across 193 2/3 innings last year. He's set to become a free agent following the 2012 season. Source: Adam Rubin on Twitter |
