Indians manager Manny Acta said Monday that Roberto Hernandez is confident he will receive his travel visa and return to the team.
Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, was arrested in his native Dominican Republic in January for falsifying his identity. He reached a deal last month to have the charges dropped in exchange for completing a work program, but it's not clear when he'll receive a visa to travel to the United States. It's possible that MLB could still levy a suspension, though the Indians are hopeful that reducing his salary will serve as an appropriate punishment. He's staying in playing shape in the meantime.

According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians are hopeful that reducing Roberto Hernandez's salary could function as a punishment in lieu of a suspension.
This is relevant given recent reports that Marlins' right-hander Juan Carlos Oviedo could face as much as a six-week suspension from MLB if or when he is granted a work visa to return to the United States. Hernandez was scheduled to make $7 million this year after his option was picked up in the fall, but it was recently reduced to $2.5 million in base salary plus incentives. The Indians also reduced his $9 million option for 2013 to $6 million, though he would have the chance to make an additional $3 million with performance incentives. Hernandez recently had his false identity charge dropped in exchange for completing a work program in his native Dominican Republic. He won't earn anything as long as he remains on MLB's restricted list.

The Associated Press reports that Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, will make $2.5 million as a base salary in 2012 and can earn an additional $2.7 million in performance and roster bonuses.
We learned earlier this month that Hernandez agreed to have his contract restructured following his arrest for false identity charges in his native Dominican Republic. He was previously due to make $7 million this season. The Indians also reduced his $9 million option for 2013 to $6 million, though he would have the chance to make an additional $3 million with performance incentives. We recently learned that Heredia cut a deal to have his false identity charges against dropped in return for completing a work program in his native Dominican Republic. "He looked good for the first time," Acta said. "He swung the bat good, but it's just a start. We're not going to rush anything. He's going to continue his rehab, and I'm anticipating that he's going to go on a rehab assignment where he's going to have plenty of at-bats before he comes up here and plays." Sizemore has been hitting, throwing and doing running and agility drills, but he's not close to returning to the lineup. He's hoping to be back before the end of June.
