Despite retiring Wednesday, Tim Worrell will get paid the $2 million he's still owed by the Giants for 2007.
Ugh. Now the only benefit to his departure is that the Giants will get his 40-man roster spot to use on Russ Ortiz, not that they couldn't have just waived him anyway. Worrell said his shoulder is feeling good after August surgery, but that he was continuing to have problems with his neck, which resulted in his first DL stint last year.

Giants announced the retirement of RHP Tim Worrell.
It's good news for the Giants that they'll get out of paying him an additional $2 million after GM Brian Sabean burdened the organization with his two-year, $4 million contract last winter. Worrell had a 7.52 ERA in 20 1/3 innings before undergoing shoulder surgery last year. The 39-year-old was expected to be ready for spring training, but he's chosen to call it a career rather than continue his rehab. The Giants could redirect his money into a proposal for another reliever.

The Giants said Tim Worrell's arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder Wednesday was more extensive than the team initially expected
Yeah, that's a surprise. In addition to having labrum damage repaired, the Giants had to remove scar tissue from the AC joint. "There was a fair amount of cleanup to be done," trainer Stan Conte said. The Giants are still projecting Worrell to be ready for spring training, but time will tell.

Tim Worrell, who had a 7.52 ERA this year before being placed on the DL last month, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder Wednesday.
It's believed that Worrell has some labrum damage. He's out for the season.

Giants placed RHP Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right hand.
Vogelsong was hit by a pitch while swinging the bat in the fifth inning Tuesday and suffered fractures above and below the top knuckle in his pinkie. He's expected to undergo surgery Tuesday and will likely miss around six weeks. Chad Gaudin is the most likely replacement for the rotation, though the Giants could call up Michael Kickham from Triple-A.
