Brad Ausmus announced his retirement after the Dodgers' last game of the 2010 season.
Ausmus has struggled to stay healthy the last couple of years and didn't amass even 200 plate appearances over those last two seasons combined, so it was probably time for the 41-year-old to hang 'em up. He finishes with a .251/.325/.343 line that does a good job approximating his offensive value, but it was his work behind the plate that afforded him a 17-year career.

As he should. This season hasn't worked out quite as the 41-year-old Ausmus would have hoped, as he has been limited to just 20 games after undergoing back surgery in April.

Brad Ausmus said Saturday that he will retire at the end of the season.
This year is it,'' Ausmus said plainly. The 41-year-old backup catcher has spent most of the year rehabbing a back injury and is just 2-for-8 with a double and an RBI in the two games in which he has been able to participate. He currently stands as a .252/.325/.345 career hitter over 17 seasons.

Dodgers activated C Brad Ausmus from the 60-day disabled list.
The odds were against Ausmus when he underwent back surgery in April, but the 41-year-old catcher is back in the major leagues. That being said, it will be interesting to see how long the Dodgers will forge ahead with three catchers on their active roster.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Carl Crawford's left hamstring strain is "fairly significant" and the outfielder will be out longer than 15 days.
Mattingly had said previously that he didn't think Crawford would miss as much as a month, so we're probably looking at around a three-week absence. Scott Van Slyke will continue seeing the bulk of the playing time in left field while Crawford is out.

Dodgers placed OF Scott Van Slyke on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder bursitis.
Van Slyke initially suffered the injury in late May but had been playing through it. It's poor timing for Van Slyke, as he had been slated to receive regular at-bats while Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp were out. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio on Tuesday that Matt Kemp (hamstring) is currently running at "75 percent without pain."
Kemp is making progress, but there's no timetable for him to begin a rehab assignment. The Dodgers have already ruled out his return until at least June 24, but it sounds like it will come later than that.

Josh Beckett said he'll undergo season-ending surgery if rest and rehab for a nerve issue in his pitching arm doesn't work.
The right-hander noted that he's "absolutely" confident he'll pitch this season, but there's a level of uncertainty involved. He'll be shut down for the next four weeks before trying to throw again. If Beckett does ultimately need an operation, he expects to be ready for next season.

The move clears a spot for Scott Van Slyke on the 40-man roster. Billingsley had season-ending Tommy John surgery last month and will likely miss the early part of 2014.

Elbert had a pair of surgeries on his elbow over the offseason, but obviously neither of them wound up working. The Dodgers are giving him a 12-16 month timetable, so it's possible he could miss all of 2014, as well.
