A-Rod is finally beginning to take major strides in his recovery from January hip surgery. He ran the bases at 75 percent effort over the weekend and is now ready to begin working on his timing at the plate. The veteran third baseman will be activated from the disabled list shortly after the All-Star break if everything continues to go according to plan with his rehab.

Alex Rodriguez (hip) ran the bases at 75 percent effort on Saturday.
It's a significant step as the third baseman works his way back from hip surgery. "I’m curious to see how he’s going to feel tomorrow, or the next day," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Saturday. "But that’s something that he hasn’t been doing. And that’s good." A-Rod has also been taking batting practice and fielding grounders. He obviously has a long ways to go but appears to be progressing on schedule so far. The Yankees are hoping to get him back shortly after the All-Star break.

According to the New York Times, the SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball expressed interest in obtaining Alex Rodriguez from the Yankees this winter.
But the Yankees didn't bother engaging in serious discussions with the Japanese club because they knew A-Rod would never agree to a trade. The veteran third baseman needed major hip surgery shortly after the Hawks' inquiry and that probably would have killed the deal anyway. Rodriguez is still in rehab mode from that January hip procedure and is currently aiming to join the Yankees' active roster around the All-Star break.

Alex Rodriguez (hip) fielded grounders and took 25 swings in an indoor batting cage Monday at the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa, Florida.
Kicking off his third week of on-field activities following hip surgery, Rodriguez also ran from pole to pole near the warning track four times. "Not bad," said Rodriguez. It's not clear when he'll begin playing in games, but the Yankees hope to have him back around midseason.

Yankees placed 1B Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 16, with right wrist inflammation.
An MRI over the weekend didn't reveal any new damage in the wrist, but he was given a cortisone shot and will now get some extended rest. The Yankees are hopeful that he'll be able to play through the condition for the entire season, but the possibility of surgery still looms. Lyle Overbay will fill in at first base once again.

Jeter hit off a tee and took swings in an indoor cage before resuming light infield work. It was the first time he has done any baseball activities since mid-April. Assuming he avoids setbacks, Jeter could be ready to rejoin the Yankees' lineup in about six weeks.

Kevin Youkilis has a herniated disc in his back and will undergo surgery to repair it on Thursday.
He is expected to need about 10-12 weeks of rest and rehab, which puts his season in jeopardy. It's another brutal blow to the Yankees, who have been without third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip) all year. Youkilis was batting .219/.305/.343 with two home runs and eight RBI in 28 games as A-Rod's fill-in at the hot corner.
