Paul Byrd allowed two runs over five innings against the Orioles on Wednesday night, but didn't factor into the decision in an eventual 7-5 win.
After getting smoked in his last outing, Byrd walked the tightrope on Wednesday. He was fortunate to get out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning with just one run scoring. He yielded six hits in all, while walking three and striking out just one. It wasn't great. It was certainly shaky. But it was enough to keep the Red Sox in the game.

Paul Byrd was hammered for seven runs over 2 1/3 innings in a 12-2 loss to the White Sox on Friday night.
The Red Sox may have went to the well once too often. The seven runs were the most Byrd has allowed in a start since August, 11 2007. He managed to battle out of the second inning by allowing just two runs, but the White Sox swallowed him alive in the third, plating five runs on six hits. Junichi Tazawa rescued Byrd's line from further damage. With the Red Sox clinging to the Wild Card lead, it might be time to say "Bye, Bye Byrdy" in Boston.

Making his season-debut, Paul Byrd tossed six shutout innings to beat the Blue Jays on Sunday.
Not a bad start, Byrd struck out just one and walked three, but he also allowed just three hits. Two of the walks came in the fourth inning with two outs to load the bases, but Byrd got out of it when Jose Bautista flew out to right. AL-only leaguers in need of wins or a solid WHIP can take a chance on him, but he probably won't be an asset in ERA and certainly won't be in strikeouts.

Red Sox purchased the contract of RHP Paul Byrd from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Byrd signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox on Aug. 5, having taken the first half of the year off. Byrd will oppose the Blue Jays, fitting as Byrd pitched five of his last nine starts last year against Toronto. His last start in Triple-A resulted in one earned run over seven innings. Against weaker hitting teams like Toronto, he's a fine play.

Ross has been out of commission for a little over a week with concussion-related symptoms, but he's feeling much better of late. The Red Sox will still take things slowly with him, but he's moving in the right direction.

Franklin Morales (back, pectoral) is expected to make at least two more rehab starts before being activated from the disabled list.
Morales threw three innings in his last outing and will stretch it out to four innings Saturday. The lefty would have been activated by now had the Red Sox wanted him as a reliever, but they're stretching him out as a starter in case he's needed in that role. "Well, he'll likely get to four innings [on Saturday], and if we don't change course with his role, we'd like to get him to a minimum of five before we'd look to do something back here," manager John Farrell said.

Joel Hanrahan was upbeat Friday after he required Tommy John surgery in addition to flexor tendon surgery on Thursday.
Hanrahan will be in a cast for ten days, but will start the rehab process shortly thereafter. Either way, he's looking at a 12-to-14 month timetable for his return. Hanrahan, who is a free agent after the season, is a long way away from having any tangible fantasy value.
