Red Sox waived catcher Doug Mirabelli for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.
The Red Sox guaranteed Mirabelli only $150,000 when they re-signed him, so they're not losing much money here. Still, it's a very surprising move that they'd risk upsetting chemistry and take Tim Wakefield out of his comfort zone in order to go with Kevin Cash as their No. 2 catcher. Cash is an excellent defender and he did impress while catching Wakefield during Mirabelli's DL stint last year, but he's one of the very worst hitters at the upper levels of the game. Maybe it's an upgrade for Boston, but the difference in performance shouldn't be worth even one game in the standings. Depending on how Wakefield reacts, it might be necessary to drop him in draft lists.

The Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have released Doug Mirabelli.
Mirabelli has long been Tim Wakefield's personal catcher, but his bat has declined over the past few seasons and the team apparently feels comfortable with Kevin Cash as Jason Varitek's backup. The newspaper notes that Mirabelli was in uniform this morning before being scratched from the lineup, so the decision seems to have been a sudden one.

Red Sox re-signed catcher Doug Mirabelli to a one-year, $550,000 contract.
Mirabelli appears finished offensively at age 37, but the Red Sox figured it wasn't worth taking a chance on another catcher meshing well with Tim Wakefield. As long as he's not needed in an expanded roll, he won't do much harm. A major injury to Jason Varitek would almost certainly force the Red Sox to make a trade.

The Red Sox will re-sign Doug Mirabelli to a one-year deal worth about $550,000.
Incentives could bring the value of the deal up to $1 million or so. If the Red Sox seriously contemplated any other free agent backups this winter, they kept it quiet. Mirabelli has pretty much lost it offensively, but he still does a nice job of handling Tim Wakefield's knuckler. If Jason Varitek stays healthy, the Red Sox should be fine.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said on WEEI in Boston that Shane Victorino (hamstring) is out of the lineup again Wednesday.
Victorino hasn't played since he left Monday's game with left hamstring tightness, but Farrell said he is "moving in the right direction." Consider him day-to-day.

Franklin Morales (back, pectoral) is expected to make at least two more rehab starts before being activated from the disabled list.
Morales threw three innings in his last outing and will stretch it out to four innings Saturday. The lefty would have been activated by now had the Red Sox wanted him as a reliever, but they're stretching him out as a starter in case he's needed in that role. "Well, he'll likely get to four innings [on Saturday], and if we don't change course with his role, we'd like to get him to a minimum of five before we'd look to do something back here," manager John Farrell said.

Joel Hanrahan was upbeat Friday after he required Tommy John surgery in addition to flexor tendon surgery on Thursday.
Hanrahan will be in a cast for ten days, but will start the rehab process shortly thereafter. Either way, he's looking at a 12-to-14 month timetable for his return. Hanrahan, who is a free agent after the season, is a long way away from having any tangible fantasy value.
