Cubs RHP Kerry Wood retired.
Wood fittingly ended his career by striking out Dayan Viciedo, the lone hitter he faced, in Friday's game against the White Sox. He walked off the mound to a standing ovation and a hug from his son. The oft-injured right-hander made two All-Star games and won the Rookie of the Year award in 1998. Over a 14-year career, he went 86-75 with 63 saves, a 3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1,582 strikeouts across 1,380 innings.

Kerry Wood ended his career by striking out Dayan Viciedo, the lone hitter he faced, in Friday's game against the White Sox.
Wood then got to walk off the mound to a standing ovation and a hug from his son on the way to the dugout. It was a great ending to a career that didn't have nearly as many highs as once seemed destined but that was pretty darn good nonetheless.
Fri, May 18, 2012 04:59:00 PM
Kerry Wood will make one more appearance for the Cubs before officially announcing his retirement.
It will come sometime during the weekend series at Wrigley Field against the White Sox. Wood, who has posted an 8.64 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 5/11 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings this season, will get a nice sendoff from the home fans before riding off into the sunset.

Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports that Kerry Wood will announce his retirement Friday.
Wood said at the end of last season that he was either going to pitch for the Cubs in 2012 or retire, but this still comes as a surprise. He's been woeful so far this season, posting an 8.64 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 5/11 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings, but the right-hander will turn just 35 next month. It's not clear if the oft-injured right-hander is dealing with something physically or if he's just decided to call it quits. He'll end his career with an 86-75 record, 63 saves, a 3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1,581 strikeouts over 1,379 2/3 innings across 14 seasons.

Steve Clevenger (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Monday.
Clevenger has been over his oblique strain for a while now, but he's on the 60-day DL and not eligible to return until mid-June. It's probably not a given that he'll be added to the big league roster once eligible.

David DeJesus was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain following an MRI on Monday.
This confirms the original diagnosis. DeJesus suffered the injury when he slammed into the center field fence during Friday's game against the Mets. There's still no timetable for his return.

Scott Baker (elbow) did some light tosses from a distance of 45 feet Monday.
It was Baker's first time throwing since he was shut down near the end of spring training with a right elbow strain. The Cubs will know a lot more about his timetable once he starts to build up his workload.

Kyuji Fujikawa underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
The reconstructive elbow procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews and deemed a success. Fujikawa has already been placed on the 60-day disabled list and is unlikely to be ready to pitch for the Cubs again until June of next season. He signed a two-year, $9.5 million free agent contract with Chicago this past winter.

D.L.
Cubs placed RHP Zach Putnam on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow soreness.
Putnam left Tuesday's game with elbow soreness and is scheduled to undergo an MRI. The Cubs have called up Brooks Raley to replace him on the active roster.

Arodys Vizcaino
D.L.
Arodys Vizcaino has been ruled out for the season after recently undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to address a calcium buildup.
Vizcaino wasn't progressed as hoped in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and now we know why. It's a shame that he won't appear for the Cubs in 2013, but the good news is that his ligaments are fine and he should be ready to go for spring training. Vizcaino will be shut down for six weeks before beginning his rehab.
