Francisco Cordero will undergo surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder later this month.
Cordero never latched on with a team this winter and can now be ruled out for the entire 2013 season. The 37-year-old right-hander hopes to play winter ball and hasn't given up on eventually returning to the bigs. He posted a 7.55 ERA in 39 1/3 innings last season.

Astros released RHP Francisco Cordero.
Cordero went on the DL last month with a sprained toe ligament, and while the toe is better, he recently developed a sore shoulder. The 37-year-old might have to settle for a minor league deal this winter after putting up a 7.55 ERA and 2.01 WHIP over 47 games this season.

Francisco Cordero is experiencing a "cranky" shoulder.
Cordero's sprained toe ligament is healed, but his season could be over because of shoulder soreness that he's developed between throwing sessions. The impending free agent right-hander won't have much of a market this winter, especially if he's unable to make it back this month.

Justin Maxwell (hand) hit 15 balls off a tee and took 30 soft-tosses on Monday.
Maxwell is no longer wearing a brace on his fractured left hand and is progressing steadily. He's scheduled to have a routine X-ray on Tuesday to see how the healing is coming along. The outfielder should make a late May/early June return if all goes well.

Bud Norris left Tuesday's start against the Royals following six scoreless innings after aggravating his back injury.
Norris was originally supposed to start Sunday after leaving his previous outing with back spasms but was pushed back just in case. Obviously, it appears that he's not over the ailment. The righty gave up just five hits and two walks over six frames before exiting Tuesday. The Astros should provide an update on his status after the game.

Josh Fields (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with High-A Quad Cities.
Fields is scheduled to throw two innings. The Rule 5 pick appeared in two games with the Astros in early April prior to being placed on the disabled list. If all goes well, he could return to the big club sometime this month.

Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
