According to Martin Leclerc of Quebec-based RueFrontenac.com, 34-year-old reliever Eric Gagne has decided to retire from baseball.
Gagne spent 10 seasons in the major leagues and will finish with a 3.47 career ERA and 1.16 career WHIP. He won the NL Cy Young Award in 2003, when he saved 55 games and registered a lights-out 15.0 K/9 for the Dodgers. Not every season was a smooth one for the Quebec-born Gagne, but he should be remembered as one of the more dominant ninth-inning relievers to ever grace a major league mound.

Dodgers released RHP Eric Gagne.
His second stint with the team lasted all of a month and could signal the end of the line for the former Cy Young winner. Gagne had said previously that he was willing to put in some time at Triple-A in order to make it back to the majors, but either that changed or the Dodgers decided there wasn't much point to trying it. He hasn't been healthy and effective since mid-2008.

Dodgers reassigned RHP Eric Gagne, LHP Scott Elbert, RHP Scott Dohmann, outfielder Michael Restovich and infielder John Lindsey to minor league camp.
Gagne hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2008 and hasn't been an effective pitcher for longer than that. He failed to covert his long-shot opportunity at a big league job, but could conceivably resurface later this season. Elbert was in competition for the fifth starter job, but will have to settle for another season aboard the Albuquerque-to-Dodgertown Express.

Eric Gagne surrendered two runs and three hits in an inning Saturday against the White Sox.
Gagne almost surely will have to work his way back to the majors by putting in some Triple-A time at the start of the year. His stuff isn't there right now.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Carl Crawford's left hamstring strain is "fairly significant" and the outfielder will be out longer than 15 days.
Mattingly had said previously that he didn't think Crawford would miss as much as a month, so we're probably looking at around a three-week absence. Scott Van Slyke will continue seeing the bulk of the playing time in left field while Crawford is out.

Dodgers placed OF Scott Van Slyke on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder bursitis.
Van Slyke initially suffered the injury in late May but had been playing through it. It's poor timing for Van Slyke, as he had been slated to receive regular at-bats while Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp were out. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined.

Josh Beckett said he'll undergo season-ending surgery if rest and rehab for a nerve issue in his pitching arm doesn't work.
The right-hander noted that he's "absolutely" confident he'll pitch this season, but there's a level of uncertainty involved. He'll be shut down for the next four weeks before trying to throw again. If Beckett does ultimately need an operation, he expects to be ready for next season.

The move clears a spot for Scott Van Slyke on the 40-man roster. Billingsley had season-ending Tommy John surgery last month and will likely miss the early part of 2014.

Chris Capuano (lat) threw four scoreless innings in his first rehab start Friday with Triple-A Albuquerque.
He allowed one hit, no walks, and had five strikeouts. Capuano, currently on the DL with a left lat strain, is expected to rejoin the Dodgers' rotation on June 19 against the Yankees.

Elbert had a pair of surgeries on his elbow over the offseason, but obviously neither of them wound up working. The Dodgers are giving him a 12-16 month timetable, so it's possible he could miss all of 2014, as well.
