It's a major league deal, so Gonzalez will immediately take Phil Humber's spot in the bullpen. The righty holds a 7.88 ERA and 1.75 WHIP over three big league appearances this season.

Edgar Gonzalez has elected to become a free agent.
Gonzalez was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays earlier this week and then passed through waivers unclaimed. The 30-year-old right-hander should be able to latch on with a new club rather quickly.

Blue Jays designated RHP Edgar Gonzalez for assignment.
Gonzalez has allowed seven earned runs in eight major league innings this season. The right-hander seems likely to pass through waivers and head to Triple-A.

Blue Jays purchased the contract of RHP Edgar Gonzalez from Triple-A Buffalo.
Gonzalez allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings in a stint with the big club last month. He'll provide bullpen depth.

Justin Maxwell (hand) hit 15 balls off a tee and took 30 soft-tosses on Monday.
Maxwell is no longer wearing a brace on his fractured left hand and is progressing steadily. He's scheduled to have a routine X-ray on Tuesday to see how the healing is coming along. The outfielder should make a late May/early June return if all goes well.

Josh Fields (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with High-A Quad Cities.
Fields is scheduled to throw two innings. The Rule 5 pick appeared in two games with the Astros in early April prior to being placed on the disabled list. If all goes well, he could return to the big club sometime this month.

Sidelined
Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
