Mets assistant GM John Ricco said that the team is not planning on exploring a free agent lead-off hitter.
Among the free agents who would fit the bill leading off are Denard Span and Dexter Fowler. Assistant GM Ricco indicated that at least for the time being, though, they are happy with Curtis Granderson serving as their lead-off man. Said Ricco, "If we end up getting something like [a lead-off hitter], and it allows us to reshuffle things and maybe we think we’re better with [Granderson] further down the lineup, we’d be open to it. I think he’s shown over his career he can handle that. But that’s not something that’s a goal." In early November, the 34-year-old outfielder underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb suffered during the NLCS, but is expected to make a full recovery.
