Jason Hammel delivered seven strong innings, yielding only two unearned runs, but took a no-decision as the Cubs lost late to the Padres on Tuesday.
The Cubs' defense cost Hammel a win as he was otherwise denying the Padres. Kris Bryant made a throwing error in the fifth inning on a Justin Upton ground ball, which later led to a run. Starlin Castro made a fielding error to kick off the seventh, and that too led to a run later on. Hammel allowed only three hits on the evening with no walks and eight strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five outings and now sports a 2.70 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and a 49/6 K/BB ratio in 53 1/3 innings. Hammel will do battle against the Diamondbacks in Arizona the next time he starts. May 20 - 1:07 AM
