While his teammates were combining for 11 runs, Justin Smoak went 0-for-4 Sunday against the Pirates, dropping his spring average to .121.
There were no shortage of first basemen available this winter, but the Jays opted to stick with Smoak. They've even indicated that they'd like him to start regularly at first base this year, with Steve Pearce playing left field. However, with Pearce yet to play the outfield as he comes off forearm surgery and Smoak failing to make any quality contact at all this spring, one imagines that Pearce will wind up playing a lot of first base early on, putting Smoak on the bench.
