Alex Meyer came out of the pen to pitch three scoreless innings and strike out three in the Twins' defeat of the Pirates on Saturday.
Meyer walked no one, though he did hit a batter. The 2011 first-round pick of the Nationals is likely to open 2013 at Double-A, but he might make his major league debut come June or July. Much of that will depend on how the Twins' veteran pitchers fare.

Twins acquired RHP Alex Meyer from the Nationals for OF Denard Span.
Meyer, the No. 23 overall pick in 2011, posted an excellent 2.86 ERA and 139/45 K/BB ratio over 129 innings this season between Class A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac. Checking in at 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, the 22-year-old right-hander sits in the mid-90s with his fastball and has a power slider. It will help to see him against more advanced competition, but he could be an impact starter if things break right. Parting with Span means that Ben Revere will be the everyday center fielder for the Twins moving forward.

Nationals agreed to terms with first-round pick RHP Alex Meyer.
Meyer, the 23rd overall selection in June, was handed a $2 million signing bonus. He struck out 110 batters in 101 innings this past season for the Kentucky Wildcats and carries the build of a potential ace.

Nationals picked Kentucky right-hander Alex Meyer with the 23rd pick in Monday's draft.
The lanky 21-year-old posted a 2.94 ERA and struck out 110 batters in 101 innings this season for Kentucky. Meyer is still quite raw, but he throws a high-90s fastball and has the stuff and build of a potential ace. Another nice selection for the Nats.

Trevor Plouffe passed an imPACT concussion test on Thursday.
Plouffe took a knee to the head Tuesday night when he tried to break up a double play and was placed on the 7-day disabled list because of his initial wooziness. However, he has already done some cardio work and should return right around when he's first eligible.

The best-case scenario is that Mastroianni will resume weight-bearing activities in three weeks. However, he's expected to be sidelined until the second half of the season.
