Pirates signed RHP David Bromberg to a minor league contract.
Bromberg had a 3.84 ERA and 87/46 K/BB ratio in 93 2/3 innings this season in the Twins' minor league system. The 25-year-old right-hander will likely serve as minor league depth with Pittsburgh.

Twins outrighted RHP David Bromberg to Triple-A Rochester.
A minor surprise in advance of December's Rule 5 Draft. Bromberg, 24, was limited to just 42 innings this season after fracturing his arm when he was hit with a comebacker in May. However, most expected he would remain on the 40-man.

Starling Marte went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Reds 4-0 on Tuesday.
Marte was the catalyst of the Pirates offense on Tuesday. The triple led off the game and was the Pirates' only extra-base hit of the night. He later scored before singling in a run of his own in the seventh inning. Marte also stole a base in the game, his 21st of the season.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said A.J. Burnett (calf) "has been nowhere near a mound" since being placed on the disabled list.
Burnett hasn't pitched since June 8, and it appears he's not terribly close to being activated. "We're working on flexibility, mobility and strengthening," Hurdle said. "That's not to say that can't change in another 24 hours with A.J. He's really tried to not do some things at all and do a lot of things. As far as his rehab goes, he didn't want to do anything as far as moving around other than strengthening, loosening and working on the flexion part of it."

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Monday that Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) "felt good" while throwing off the mound Monday.
It's not clear what the next step will be, but it could be enough for the Pirates to send him out on a rehab start. Rodriguez has been sidelined since June 5 with left forearm tightness.

James McDonald (shoulder) might be moved to the bullpen when he is activated from the disabled list.
Gerrit Cole's promotion and Charlie Morton's return created a potential logjam in the Pittsburgh rotation and McDonald is probably going to have to be the odd man out. The 28-year-old righty owns a 5.76 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings this season. He is on the 15-day DL currently because of inflammation in his shoulder.

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) underwent rotator cuff and labrum surgery on Friday.
Karstens will be shut down for a minimum of 10-12 weeks as he recovers from the injury. He had been aiming to join the Pirates' starting rotation in early June, but is now unlikely to return this season.
