Diamondbacks optioned LHP Tyler Skaggs to Triple-A Reno.
So the battle for the Diamondbacks' final rotation spot is down to Patrick Corbin and Randall Delgado. Skaggs posted an ERA of 11.00 in nine Cactus League innings. He should pitch in the majors at some point in 2013.
Mar 18 - 11:56 AM
Tyler Skaggs came on in relief of starter Ian Kennedy and allowed five runs -- two earned -- in 2 2/3 innings in Saturday's loss to the Padres.
It's been a disastrous spring for the 21-year-old, who now has an 11.00 ERA in Cactus League play. Control was an issue for Skaggs Saturday, as he walked four batters in his 2 2/3 innings. The fact that he's now coming out of the bullpen doesn't bode well for his chances of securing the fifth spot in the Diamondbacks rotation. It's looking more and more like Skaggs will be on the outside looking in when the season starts.
Mar 16 - 7:18 PM
Tyler Skaggs allowed four runs and was charged with his second loss in Sunday's game against the Athletics.
Skaggs has really struggled this spring and has a 12.79 ERA in his first four appearances. He gave up four hits and two walks over four innings of work, including a two-run homer to Jed Lowrie. The Diamondbacks are giving Skaggs every opportunity to win a rotation spot this spring, but he'll need to get things turned around quickly to avoid being sent back down to the minors.
Mar 10 - 9:33 PM
Tyler Skaggs held Mexico scoreless over three innings in Tuesday's exhibition game.
Skaggs allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three. The left-hander really struggled in his first two spring outings, so it's good to see him taking a step in the right direction. He's competing for the No. 5 spot in the D'Backs rotation.

Aaron Hill will have his left hand examined by a doctor next Monday.
That will be two weeks after Hill was hoping to get the go-ahead to resume baseball activities, as his fractured hand is healing much slower than expected. The original timetable had him possibly returning by late May, but he probably won't be activated until well into June now.

Willie Bloomquist (oblique) could begin a rehab assignment midway through the week.
Bloomquist has been playing games at extended spring training and hasn't had any recent setbacks. He should be ready for activation before the end of the month.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Thursday that Adam Eaton will "probably" get a second opinion on his left elbow from Dr. James Andrews in the coming days.
Eaton was recently pulled off his minor league rehab assignment due to renewed discomfort in his elbow. Towers said an MRI showed fluid around his ulnar collateral ligament, but no new damage was found. As of now, he's expected to rest for 2-3 weeks before restarting his rehab program, but he'll get Andrews' opinion just to be on the safe side.

Daniel Hudson (elbow) gave up two runs on five hits over four innings in an extended spring training game on Friday.
It's the first time since last year's Tommy John surgery that Hudson has faced hitters wearing a different uniform. The D'Backs says the righty's fastball sat in the 91-93 mph range, which is obviously a good sign. "The light at the end of the tunnel is getting a little bit brighter now," Hudson said. Hudson will appear in another extended spring game next week and doesn't appear far off from a rehab assignment. He could be back as soon as late June if all goes well, though the big club doesn't currently have room for him in the rotation.

J.J. Putz (elbow) has been playing catch from 90 feet and doing strengthening exercises, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Saturday.
There is still no timetable for a return, and the Diamondbacks will proceed with caution with their 36-year-old closer. But it's promising that Putz is back to throwing less than a month after there were reports he could need season-ending surgery to fix his elbow problems.
