Nationals prospect RHP A.J. Cole allowed three runs on four hits and three walks and struck out eight batters over five innings on Monday for Triple-A Syracuse.
Cole, 22, is 7-0 with a 3.43 ERA over 63 innings since moving up to Triple-A, but he’s only fanned 50 batters against 17 walks during that span, while opposing hitters are batting .283 with an .800 OPS and nine home runs. On the season, he’s posted a 13-3 record to go along with a 3.16 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 111-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 134 innings between the Double- and Triple-A levels. The right-hander won’t carve out a consistent role with the Nationals until 2015 (at the earliest), but a September promotion to work out of the team’s bullpen is a distinct possibility.
