Carlos Martinez threw a scoreless inning Sunday as the Cardinals completed a four-game sweep in Milwaukee.
Martinez has now thrown two scoreless frames since earning a promotion from Double-A Springfield last Friday, yielding just one hit. The talented 21-year-old boasts a high-90s fastball and some electric secondary stuff. He can be a force out of the St. Louis 'pen.

Cardinals purchased the contract of RHP Carlos Martinez from Double-A Springfield.
The Cards still have high hopes for Martinez as a starter, but they're desperate for bullpen help right now and think the top prospect can help. Ranked by Baseball America prior to the season as the No. 38 prospect in the game, Martinez has posted a 2.74 ERA with 277 strikeouts over 259 2/3 career minor league innings. The Dominican has touched 100 mph as a starter, so he's going to add plenty of heat to the St. Louis bullpen. For the time being, he seems likely to work the seventh inning ahead of Trevor Rosenthal and Edward Mujica.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch speculated Monday that the Cardinals might call up Carlos Martinez.
Martinez missed spring training because of visa trouble but has been fast-tracked to Double-A Springfield and could be added to the battered St. Louis bullpen at some point soon if he shows positive signs on the farm. The 21-year-old right-hander has a nasty arsenal of pitches, including an upper-90s fastball, and would likely do well in a setup role. He is ultimately expected to be a starter.

Cardinals prospect Carlos Martinez is expected to report to Double-A Springfield within the next few weeks.
Martinez had visa trouble this spring and missed most of camp, so he's been getting in pitching shape for the past couple of weeks at the Cardinals' complex in Jupiter, Florida. The 21-year-old right-hander posted a cool 2.93 ERA and 92/32 K/BB ratio across 104 1/3 innings last season between High-A and Double-A.

The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Carlos Martinez. Furcal is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.

Jaime Garcia will visit Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday for a second opinion on his left shoulder.
Garcia was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with a left shoulder strain and could be facing season-ending surgery. Tyler Lyons will fill his spot in the rotation for now, but the Cardinals are hoping to have Jake Westbrook (elbow) back from the disabled list soon.

Westbrook threw for about 15 minutes on flat ground instead. The fact that he did throw indicates that it's probably not really a setback as much as the Cardinals just decided to wait a bit longer before having him throw from the bump. Westbrook is expected to miss at least a couple more starts.

When it was initially revealed that Carpenter was going to attempt a comeback this season, the general assumption was that he would be aiming to join the St. Louis bullpen. But the veteran right-hander is stretching himself out in case a spot opens up in the Cardinals' starting rotation. The remarkable story continues.
