Red Sox prospect LF/3B Garin Cecchini had a huge game Thursday, going 4-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs and three runs scored for Triple-A Pawtucket.
It’s been a rough year for Cecchini, who is batting just .201/.271/.317 with 12 extra-base hits and an uncharacteristically bad 56/15 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 51 games this season. The 24-year-old fared well in his first taste of the major leagues last season, posting a .258/.361/.452 batting line and four extra-base hits in 31 at-bats. A third baseman for most of his career, Cecchini has started only 12 games at the hot corner this season compared to 25 in left field. He’s also appeared at first base in 11 games. Cecchini’s future role with the Red Sox is likely that of a utility player, but he’ll first need to get back on track offensively in Triple-A before getting another look in the big leagues.
