Javier Baez had two hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning, in the Cubs loss Saturday.
The home run was his second of the spring, and his good day raised his Cactus League average to .360. Still, the 20-year-old shortstop is at least two years away from contributing to the big club. At this point, days like Saturday just fuel the hype machine for the top prospect.

Cubs president Theo Epstein confirmed that top prospect Javier Baez will not be given a shot at making the team in spring training.
Baez is in training camp as a non-roster invite, but isn't close to being major league ready and will likely open 2013 at High-A Dayton. The 20-year-old batted .294/.346/.534 with 16 home runs, 24 stolen bases and an .888 OPS in 80 games last season between two levels of the minors. Starlin Castro remains the Cubs' shortstop of the immediate future, but there's been speculation that he could be moved for Baez at some point.

Cubs prospect shortstop Javier Baez has left the Arizona Fall League with a left thumb injury.
Baez suffered the injury off the field on Saturday while celebrating, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Cubs believe he broke the tip of his thumb, but the good news is that it shouldn't have an impact on his readiness for spring training. The 19-year-old batted .294/.346/.534 with 16 home runs, 46 RBI, 24 stolen bases and an .888 OPS in 80 games this season between Class A Peoria and High-A Daytona and is regarded as the Cubs' top prospect.

He was ranked as the No. 25 prospect in the game on Baseball America's midseason list.

He's also throwing from 120-130 feet and is expected to start swinging a bat early next week. Clevenger is on the 60-day DL and won't be eligible to return until mid-June. He should have no trouble being ready at that time, though he's not a given to return to the big club.

Scott Baker (elbow) did some light tosses from a distance of 45 feet Monday.
It was Baker's first time throwing since he was shut down near the end of spring training with a right elbow strain. The Cubs will know a lot more about his timetable once he starts to build up his workload.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Tuesday that Arodys Vizcaino (elbow) is a couple weeks away from appearing in a game.
He is presumably referring to an extended spring training game. Vizcaino, who will continue his rehab with the Cubs rather than at the club's spring training facility, is expected back around midseason.
