Astros sent RHP Chuckie Fick outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Fick appeared in just 18 games with the Astros this year and posted an underwhelming 5.09 ERA in 47 appearances at the Triple-A level. If he can improve on his strikeout-to-walk ratios, Fick will have a chance at a middle relief role in spring training.

Fick has a 4.68 ERA and 9/11 K/BB ratio over 13 innings at the big league level this year. He'll pitch in middle relief.

Fick was strictly a low-leverage reliever since coming over from the Cardinals. He'll return to a 4.68 ERA over 42-plus innings in the minors.

Astros claimed RHP Chuckie Fick off waivers from the Cardinals.
He's been added to the major league roster. General manager Jeff Luhnow, of course, used to oversee the Cardinals' farm system and clearly sees something in Fick. Fick held just a 4.68 ERA and 20/13 K/BB ratio over 42 1/3 innings with Triple-A Memphis this season.

Justin Maxwell (hand) hit 15 balls off a tee and took 30 soft-tosses on Monday.
Maxwell is no longer wearing a brace on his fractured left hand and is progressing steadily. He's scheduled to have a routine X-ray on Tuesday to see how the healing is coming along. The outfielder should make a late May/early June return if all goes well.

Josh Fields (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with High-A Quad Cities.
Fields is scheduled to throw two innings. The Rule 5 pick appeared in two games with the Astros in early April prior to being placed on the disabled list. If all goes well, he could return to the big club sometime this month.

Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
