Astros prospect RHP Mark Appel got back on track Wednesday, firing 6 2/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts for Triple-A Fresno.
He scattered six hits, walked two and hit a batter in the outing, throwing 67 of 100 pitches for strikes. It was Appel’s first scoreless outing since moving up to Triple-A in late June. The 23-year-old definitely has pitched better of late, allowing three or fewer runs in seven of his last eight starts, but he’s yet to show the consistency that made him the No. 1 overall pick two years back. Overall, Appel has pitched to disappointing 4.58 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 60/29 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 78 2/3 innings (16 starts) this season between the Double- and Triple-A levels. He should get a crack at Houston’s starting rotation at some point during the second half. Jul 9 - 2:42 PM
