Rafael Montero fired five innings of shutout baseball against the Braves on Saturday as the Mets won 3-0.
He allowed four hits and a walk while striking out one. He has been excellent this spring, now rocking a 1.96 ERA with 21 punchouts in 18 1/3 innings. He would seem to be a good candidate for the fifth slot in the Mets rotation but this was actually his first start in Grapefruit League action. Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo have been considered the frontrunners for the final rotation slot but Montero is making a very strong case that he should get the nod. He saw limited major-league action last season, struggling with his control as shown by his 16 walks (against 20 strikeouts) in 19 innings that led to an 8.05 ERA. Mar 25 - 4:03 PM
