Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday he expects Jimmy Butler will have a starting role next season.
Butler emerged as one of the Bulls' better players down the stretch and stepped up even more once Luol Deng was sidelined following Game 5 of the Nets series. The former first-round pick started every game this postseason and averaged 14.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.4 made 3-pointers in 45.3 minutes per game in the seven contests Deng missed. Butler will enter next season as a very appetizing swingman in all formats, especially considering the return to health of Derrick Rose.

Jimmy Butler played 46 minutes against the Heat during Game 4's 88-65 loss to Miami, scoring 12 points with five boards, one steal and three turnovers.
He would have played 48 minutes, but this game was over before the fourth quarter even started. The Bulls shot 25.7 percent from the field in the game, third worst for a playoff team since 1986. Butler has been one of the Bulls best players in this series along with Joakim Noah (six points, nine boards and one steal), so Butler likely earned a significant role for the Bulls next season.

Jimmy Butler played all 48 minutes against the Heat on Friday for 17 points, five boards, three assists, three steals and two 3-pointers.
He played solid defense on LeBron up until the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter, but LeBron got the best of him down the stretch. Butler played 48 minutes in four of the last five games for Chicago and he's really come into his own in his sophomore season after playing just 8.5 minutes per game in his rookie season.
May 10 - 10:59 PM
Jimmy Butler played just 31 minutes in Game 2's 115-78 loss to the Heat, scoring nine points with three boards, one assist, one steal and two 3-pointers.
Butler entered the game as just the fourth player since the merger to play every minute of three consecutive playoff games. He picked up his second foul in the early part of the second quarter. The score of the game dictated that Butler get taken out and this was the worst playoff loss in the history of the Bulls.

Derrick Rose
Sidelined
Tom Thibodeau said Derrick Rose (knee) is feeling like himself again, and raved about how Rose looked in a recent workout.
"I worked him out about a week ago. It was great," Thibodeau said. "Watching the way he's moving now, there's a confidence." Thibodeau added that Rose never returned to full explosiveness during the season that he was comfortable with, but "he's there now. He feels great, and that's the most important thing." Rose is running, lifting, playing and shooting, so there is absolutely no reason to believe he won't be ready for the start of next season.

Kirk Hinrich
Sidelined
Kirk Hinrich (calf) has been working out since the Bulls ended their season.
Hinrich's calf won't need surgery, and it sounds as if he's finally recovered from the nasty calf injury that hampered him during the playoffs. He's anything but a sure thing to hold up next season after dealing with a laundry list of injuries during the 2012/13 season.
