Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday he expects Jimmy Butler will have a starting role next season.
Butler emerged as one of the Bulls' better players down the stretch and stepped up even more once Luol Deng was sidelined following Game 5 of the Nets series. The former first-round pick started every game this postseason and averaged 14.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.4 made 3-pointers in 45.3 minutes per game in the seven contests Deng missed. Butler will enter next season as a very appetizing swingman in all formats, especially considering the return to health of Derrick Rose.

Jimmy Butler played 46 minutes against the Heat during Game 4's 88-65 loss to Miami, scoring 12 points with five boards, one steal and three turnovers.
He would have played 48 minutes, but this game was over before the fourth quarter even started. The Bulls shot 25.7 percent from the field in the game, third worst for a playoff team since 1986. Butler has been one of the Bulls best players in this series along with Joakim Noah (six points, nine boards and one steal), so Butler likely earned a significant role for the Bulls next season.

Jimmy Butler played all 48 minutes against the Heat on Friday for 17 points, five boards, three assists, three steals and two 3-pointers.
He played solid defense on LeBron up until the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter, but LeBron got the best of him down the stretch. Butler played 48 minutes in four of the last five games for Chicago and he's really come into his own in his sophomore season after playing just 8.5 minutes per game in his rookie season.
May 10 - 10:59 PM
Jimmy Butler played just 31 minutes in Game 2's 115-78 loss to the Heat, scoring nine points with three boards, one assist, one steal and two 3-pointers.
Butler entered the game as just the fourth player since the merger to play every minute of three consecutive playoff games. He picked up his second foul in the early part of the second quarter. The score of the game dictated that Butler get taken out and this was the worst playoff loss in the history of the Bulls.

Derrick Rose
Sidelined
Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Thursday that Derrick Rose (knee) will be ready to go next season.
Rose didn't play all season after suffering a torn left ACL and MCL in Game 1 of last year's playoffs. The saga of whether he would return to the lineup reached nauseating levels in the second half of the year and he'll likely be dogged by questions about it all summer long. The good news is that he should be 100 percent when training camp opens next fall, which should mean a very long and productive season once Rose shakes off the rust.

Kirk Hinrich
Sidelined
Kirk Hinrich (calf) is not expected to need surgery.
Hinrich should be able to make a full recovery without surgery, and while that's good news, Hinrich remains an injury risk going into next season. He dealt with a myriad of injuries this season, but he should be able to keep his body in better shape playing a backup role behind Derrick Rose next season. Hinrich was never expected to play the role he wound up playing this year.

Luol Deng
Sidelined
Luol Deng (illness) reported improvement since the Bulls season ended.
Thankfully, it looks as if Deng's ordeal is coming to a conclusion at some point in the near future. He's expected to make a full recovery, but it's becoming increasingly clear how far he was from actually playing in round two against the Heat.
