CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports that Browns coach Pat Shurmur could land in Minnesota as Vikings offensive coordinator following his firing from the Browns.
In other words, Vikings current OC Bill Musgrave is not safe. Shurmur would bring to Minnesota a West Coast offense, changing schemes entering Christian Ponder's third season. This may be just informed speculation on La Canfora's part, but it's interesting nonetheless. Shurmur ran a balanced offense in Cleveland, leaning on the running game whenever game flow allowed for it.

Vikings promoted director of player personnel George Paton to assistant general manager.
Paton was reportedly one of two finalists for the Rams' vacant general manager position, with Falcons director of player personnel Les Snead being the other. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the job was Paton's "to lose." It's possible Paton's decision to stay in Minnesota was due to the fact that new Rams coach Jeff Fisher is expected to have final say on all personnel moves.

Vikings promoted VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman to general manager.
The move is mostly a formality, as Spielman has been the Vikings' primary decision maker since Brad Childress was fired as head coach. Said owner Zygi Wilf, "This establishes the organizational structure that will lead to the long-term success of the Vikings." Spielman had been Minnesota's VP of Player Personnel since 2006. He is the older brother of ex-Lions LB Chris Spielman.

AEG president Tim Leiweke indicated that Los Angeles billionaire Philip Anschultz is prepared to purchase majority interest in an NFL team.
Leiweke has spoken with officials from the Vikings, Chargers, Jaguars, Rams, and Raiders. "We're not packing any (moving) vans right now," Leiweke cautioned. But AEG is willing to pay for an NFL franchise to get out of its current lease for a move to Los Angeles. "Just as an example, if it's San Diego, they would have to pay $24 million under their agreement to get out of the lease," Leiweke said. "We would pay that." PFT's Mike Florio suggests the Vikings as the top candidate to move because the Metrodome lease is up after the 2011 season.

GM Rick Spielman gives Christian Ponder "just as much credit for getting us in the playoffs" as Adrian Peterson.
Spielman was referring specifically to Ponder's play when the Vikings won their final four games of the regular season. During that time, he completed 60.6 percent of his passes and threw just one interception, but averaged a mere 157.5 yards per game and totaled four passing scores. These comments are another case of Spielman trying to pump up Ponder's confidence. He's ready to ride or die with his 2011 No. 12 overall pick.

Adrian Peterson said his goal for this season is to run for 2,500 yards.
Peterson rumbled for 2,097 last season even though he was coming off a knee reconstruction and playing through a sports hernia. In order to reach 2,500 yards, he'd need to average 156.25 yards per day over 16 games. It's not going to happen, but Peterson is set up for another run at Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards. Lead-blocker Jerome Felton and mauling tackle Phil Loadholt are both back and Peterson will be 21 months removed from his ACL tear by the time Week 1 rolls around.

Vikings WR Greg Childs (torn patellar tendons) has resumed sprinting and cutting.
"All the necessary things I need to be doing, I'm doing now," Childs said. "I still do my cuts and my runs full speed. There is no change in the way I run or the way I play. My routes are still the same." Despite the progress, Childs admits he's not close to 100 percent. The Vikings are operating under the assumption Childs "may never play a meaningful down in the NFL." So should fantasy owners.
